Manchester United coped with the challenge of Norwich City on Saturday, beating The Canaries 2-0 at Old Trafford. The victory maintained The Red Devil’s position on top of the Barclays Premier League, all down to second half goals from Oliveira Anderson through Wayne Rooney on 68 minutes and Danny Welbeck capitalising on Ji-Sung Park’s pass on 87 minutes to end the match in a comfortable home victory ahead of the two-week International break…

Anders Lindegaard stood in for the rested David De Gea, Antonio Valencia started at right back, Patrice Evra started at left back, and Phil Jones and Jonny Evans were paired as centre-halves. In midfield was Darren Fletcher with Oliveira Anderson, while Luis Nani and Ji-Sung Park were placed on the wings. Returning to action up-front were Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez, in considerably fine condition to face Norwich City in Manchester.

Both sides started the battle of boxes early, with United testing John Ruddy through Wayne Rooney and Norwich testing Lindegaard thorough Wesley Hoolahan. The Reds failed to convert their lions share of possesion into real opportunities, while Norwich were making the best with what little of the ball they got. The first half passed without incident, but Bradley Johnson was given a nasty reception at half-time after lashing out at Chicharito on the ground.
Oliveira Anderson heads into the goals from close range on 68 minutes

The Red Devils came out with more energy in the second half after a kick up the backside from Sir Alex Ferguson. Anderson missed a chance to put United into the lead, before Anthony Pilkington did the same for Norwich. City had a couple of golden opportunities to spring a surprise goal, but all were either missed or dealt with. Sir Alex was getting annoyed with his side’s lack of determination, so he brought on Ryan Giggs and Danny Welbeck.

With Nani and Chicharito gone, United were given a revamped look, and minutes later Giggsy took a corner which was headed towards the goals first by Jones, then Rooney before finally landing on Anderson’s head inside the six-yard box to put the home side ahead on 68 minutes. The Theatre Of Dreams breathed a sigh of relief when the ball hit the back of the net, keeping the current Premier League Champions in charge at the top of the table.
But The Canaries did not submit to United, and Pilkington was about to make up for his earlier miss before Anderson got in the way. Rio Ferdinand replaced goalscorer Ando with 10 minutes to go, around the time Welbeck misplaced his foot from Rooney’s cross. Wazza tried to score himself, but United were made to work hard to secure all 3 points. Lindegaard was called into action again, before Rio stopped Norwich levelling things up.
Danny Welbeck’s majestic goalscoring record continues: Ending the contest on 87 minutes

With the match coming to the closing stages, United put together a brilliant move combining Park, Valencia and Welbeck down the right handside. For the finish, Park coolly slid the ball to Welbeck who dispatched for his 5th goal in his last 6 fixtures. The 20-year-old is really maturing this season as a top Premier League forward, and Hernandez will want to glance behind his shoulders now and again to see what competition he’s up against.

City refused to give up, and Simeon Jackson crashed a shot into the stands before Rooney almost embarrassed Ruddy with an audacious chip. His effort was too high, and was a waste considering he could have put the ball either side of the goalie to score his 10th league goal of the season. Little did it matter, as United held onto a comfortable 2-0 result. Next up in a welcome two-week International break, as long as it doesn’t cause any injury upsets.

Then, it’s time to beat Liverpool at Anfield !
