Match Report – Manchester United 5-0 Wigan Athletic Competition: FA Barclays Premier League Kick-Off & Date: 8pm, Wednesday 30th December Venue: Old Trafford (Home) Attendance: 74,560 A 5-star 68th Birthday present for the legend, Sir Alex Ferguson on a chilly Manchester night against Wigan. Goals from Rooney, Carrick, Rafael, Berbatov and Valencia got the New Year’s celebrations off to a good start, catching up with Chelsea to 2 points and a helping hand to our goal difference. The first goal, in the 28th minute came from a very familiar name – Wayne Rooney; Valencia down the wing, who layed it off to Rafael – with a stunning cross, found Rooney’s foot and he slotted it home dutifully, after numerous other close chances from the man in-form. Then in the 31st – Dimitar Berbatov side-footed the ball out-wide to Valencia who took one look, and spotted Carrick – back on the edge of the box, Carrick slotted it home for United’s second. The third came on the stroke of half-time, Fletcher picked out Rafael Da Silva in the box, Rafael then rounded 5 Wigan players and then the goalkeeper in a stunning goal. His celebration showing brotherly-love – he ran straight over to the dugout, and pointed to his twin, Fabio. It was a well deserved goal for an outstanding performance from the Brazilian star ! Wigan replaced their under-preforming goalkeeper Chris Kirkland with Michael Pollitt for the second half, and as much as you might feel sorry for Wigan – United weren’t stopped there ! Antonio Valencia was involved once again when his magnificent cross landed at the feet of Berbatov, who tapped-in for United’s forth in the 50th minute, this was just after Rooney had hit the crossbar with a great header, created by Berba ! The main question on everybody’s lips at ‘The Theatre Of Dreams’ was, ‘are they finished yet ?’ – No ! Wayne Rooney made another good run across the pitch, he fed in United’s in-form Ecuadorian winger, Valencia – who lobbed the sliding Wigan keeper in the 75th to complete a 5-star display. United now lie just 2 points off the summit and 5 goals did no-harm to the goal difference. 2009 has been a fantastic year for United – except for Champions League Final disappointment, but the rout against Wigan leads the way into a promising 2010 !
