It’s do-or-die for ‘The Three Lions’, as they more or less have to win in Port Elizabeth to make it into the last 16. Embarrassing as it has been for country, nothing could be worse than getting knocked-out early on…

Possible Scenarios

  • So basically, if England beat Slovenia, and USA draw or lose against Algeria – they go through to Round 2 as Group C winners. 
  • If England win, and USA win – they also go through, the winner depends on goal difference (currently USA 3, England 1). 
  • If England draw, and USA draw – they may go through depending on goals scored (ie. a high-scoring game) – if the goals scored are the same, it will go into a penalty shoot-out.
  • If England draw, USA win or lose – England head home, and USA either top the group (high goal scoring win) or finish runners-up (if they win by a small margin or lose). 
  • And finally, if England lose – it’s also bye bye, as USA and Slovenia qualify.
