Sir Alex Ferguson has today, Sunday 19th 2010, become the longest serving manager in the history of Manchester United. The Scottish gaffer surpasses fellow countryman and United legend, Sir Matt Busby. It’s been 24 years, 43 days since Fergie took over the reigns at Old Trafford….
Sir Alex has won 35 honours in over 24 years, after taking over from Ron Atkinson in 1986. ‘Fergie’ has claimed 11 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups and 2 UEFA Champions League trophies. The Reds are still on course for another 3 of those honours this season, as the ‘greatest sporting icon of all time’ enters his 25th year in charge of the club.
Sir Matt Busby sadly passed away in 1994, but played a major role in keeping Sir Alex at Old Trafford in 1990, when the current boss was expected to be fired. 21 years later, pigs would fly if Fergie were to be sacked, such has been his influence on the club.
“I am surprised. I must admit it is something I never thought about for a moment – it has been frozen into the memory bank. I thought Sir Matt Busby was here forever. He started at the end of the war and went right through to winning the European Cup in 1968.” Sir Alex told the press.

“The time span seems to be much longer than mine. Of course, there are emotional issues. He had to rebuild the team after Munich. There was so much emotion. I did not have that. Sir Matt was a lot calmer than me,” he adds. “We are different characters, with different personalities. Scottish people have a determination to do well no matter what. They travel. I came down here with the single objective of being successful.”
“The most important piece of advice he gave me was: Not to read the press. It was great advice and I have not read it since. Liverpool were the dominant team in the 1980’s. That is what I looked at. That was the big challenge for me. Also, the issue of ex-players at the club was something I was addressing for quite a long time. We have done that by bringing in some ambassadors. I wanted to keep all our great players around the club in some capacity.”
“I had Sir Bobby Charlton on the board and Sir Matt was here as well. People like that are able to understand the dimensions of Manchester United. That is necessary to understand the role of manager. It was very helpful to me.”
And someday, when the time comes, Sir Alex will sit on that board…
