A new report into the influence of Manchester United has found that the world’s leading football club has an estimated 660 Million supporters worldwide, a 100% increase from the previous study carried out by Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS). The market research also found that we are now the 6th biggest brand on the globe…
The majority of Manchester United’s success on and off the field can be attributed to one man over the past 25 years – Sir Alex Ferguson. The manager’s 37 trophies in a quarter of a century has brought about millions of fans worldwide, with the figure of followers standing at 333 Million in late 2007 following a case study by TNS Market Research. In late 2011, that number has risen to an estimated 660 Million plus United supporters living on planet earth.
No sports team anywhere can come close to the previous estimation, never mind the new one. Despite the (mostly due) criticism of American owners The Glazer Family, their London marketing group has worked wonders for The Red Devil image. 100 Million, and more, of the club’s fans are based in Asia – where Sir Alex will take his squad next summer on tour. The Glazers are also expected to soon float 25% of their shares on the Singapore Exchange.
Europe is and has been United-crazy since the Sir Matt Busby days, while America has a growing fanbase of over 10 Million alone in North America following recent pre-season friendlies in The United States Of America, Africa is full of Reds with major advertising campaigns ongoing, Asia is the fastest following continent, while soccer in Oceania is becoming a more popular sport, with the introduction of the game from a large number of expatriates.

Moving away from the number of supporters, United are now categorised as the 6th best known brand in the world. The Reds are more prominent than companies such as Coca Cola, Microsoft and Nike, with the first 5 comprising of Google, Apple, British Broadcasting Company (BBC), Dyson and Facebook. The club has reeked the benefits of being one of the largest global brans, with an operating profit of £110 Million for the last financial year.
There has been annoyance with the amount of partners United boasts – 20 official sponsors – but there has also been widespread praise for deals with AON and DHL, bringing in £120 Million over 5 years alone. None of that will be spent on new players if The Glazers stick to their dismal transfer policy, but with Sir Alex in charge the future looks as bright as ever on and off the field. A possible exit of the owners has been rumoured for a number of months now.
Manchester United itself is worth £2.4 Billion according to the planned sale of £610 Million worth of shares in Asia, which is expected to be an overpriced success. The sooner The Glazers leave Old Trafford, the more money can be spent on the squad. The stadium, at 75,000+ capacity, is already at the top of the game, while the training complex at Carrington is subject to a £25 Million investment, brining the figure spent on it to £47 Million !
