Refreshed Reds Rout Revolution 14/07/2011
Match Report – New England Revolution 1-4 Manchester United Competition: Herbalife World Football Challenge (Friendly) Kick-Off & Date: 8pm, Wednesday, 14th July 2011 Venue: Gillette Stadium, Massachusetts, US (Away) Attendance: 51,523 Manchester United began their pre-season summer tour of The United States with a bang, as over 50,000 enthusiastic soccer fans watched the Premier League Champions beat New England Revolution 4-1 at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Ashley Young got his United career off to a flying start, but it was Michael Owen, Federico ‘Kiko’ Macheda and Ji-Sung Park who were on the scoresheet. Abdoulie Mansally scored one in reply. Ash Young makes winning debut Ash Young lined-out on the left in his debut for The Red Devils, while Anders Lindegaard started in goal. Nemanja Vidic captained the side, which included a backline of Rafael Da Silva, Jonny Evans and Fabio Da Silva. Luis Nani supported Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov up-front, as Michael Carrick and Oliveira Anderson were placed in midfield. United looked sharp sporting their new home kit, and there football wasn’t too far off that either. After a mix-up with the Adidas footballs, Dimitar Berbatov was unlucky not to have tested New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis after some good interplay with Wayne Rooney. Ashley Young sent in nothing but inviting crosses, displaying his true attacking form. Running at players, Young made a lot of ground down the left flank, and it was a mystery how he went without an assist to his name in the opening stages. With Rooney attempting a bicycle-kick, Berbatov tried his luck from close range. However, both efforts failed to hit the back of the net. That was until the 2nd half introduction of Rio Ferdinand, Federico Macheda and Michael Owen. Within 5 minutes, Anderson, Nani and Carrick combined to gift Owen a one-on-one with the goalie. He was never going to miss, and didn’t. Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2011 US Tour was off to a scoring start… With Owen approaching 32 by the end of the year, the former England International striker is keen to show the boss what he can do, with speculation over his future at Old Trafford this summer building to a climax by the end of July. Just 2 minutes later, and fellow substitute Kiko Macheda found himself putting United 2-0 up. Some great movement from Carrick freed-up Macheda, who received the ball from the midfielder to slide into the back of the Revs’ net. Steve Nichol’s side offered little or nothing, with forward and club captain Shalrie Joseph wasting New England’s best chances. Anders Lindegaard was looking alert in-goal, but Revolution managed to muster a goal in the 56th minute. Referee Mark Geiger awarded the Boston side a dodgy free-kick after Abdoulie Mansally ran into Rio. The resulting dead ball attempt by Benny Feilhaber took a massive deflection off Mansally, wrong-footing Lindegaard. There was nothing United could have done about the freakish goal, but the scoreline made a game of the occasion, and if it’s one thing we know about Americans and their sports… They love the scoring. For or against ! The home side’s fightback was short-lived, as United regained their 2-goal advantage from a short corner. Rafael collected the ball from the corner flag and sent in a cross that skipped past everyone in the box. Except Macheda. The 19-year-old Italian striker calmly stroked the ball into the New England goals. Gabriel Obertan entered the fray for Ashley Young, while Ryan Giggs, Mame Diouf and Ji-Sung Park also arrived. Kiko went in search of a hat-trick, while Diouf also tested the goalkeeper. With 10 minutes to go, Gabby Obertan put his skills on show, before playing the ball into the box to Park. The South Korean winger exchanged passes with Giggsy, before deftly chipping the ball over sub shot-stopper Bobby Shuttleworth. It was a fantastic piece of football, as the crowd rose to their feet in adulation of the biggest club on earth at the Gillette Stadium. Revolution put their all into the game, and were respected by United for their presence. But yet again the sheer class of even second-choice footballers shines through for the Premier League Champions, flattering the MLS Eastern Conference team by 4-1. It was the start Sir Alex wanted to the tour, with Ashley Young impressing and no fresh injuries reported. In seven days’ time it’s Seattle Sounders after a six-hour flight across The States on Thursday… United Team: Anders Lindegaard, Rafael Da Silva, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic (Rio Ferdinand ’46), Fabio Da Silva, Luis Nani (Ryan Giggs ’67), Michael Carrick (Ji-Sung Park ’75), Oliveira Anderson (Mame Diouf ’75), Ashley Young (Gabriel Obertan ’67), Wayne Rooney (Michael Owen ’46), Dimitar Berbatov (Federico Macheda ’46).
