MotM: Rafael Da Silva, despite being sent-off !
We take a look at the players who played well, and those who under-performed against Bayern Munich. While United won 3-2 on the night, the Germans ran out 4-4 aggregate winners, thanks to away goals and Rafael Da Silva’s sending-off…

*8  Edwin Van Der Sar made some brilliant saves in the first half, but couldn’t do much about either of Bayern’s goals…

*10  Rafael Da Silva Man-of-the-Match by far, put Franck Ribery in his pocket, and created United’s third goal. A fantastic performance, and Bayern saw that – so they decided to get him sent-off, disgusting !

*7  Rio Ferdinand made some vitals tackles, especially after Rafa’s red card. Not his best performance though.

*8  Nemanja Vidic he made tackle after tackle and wouldn’t let Bayern get near the goal. Amazing defensive performance from the Serbian.

*9  Patrice Evra again, like Rafa, he played Arjen Robben off the field. Wouldn’t let him have a sniff on goal, but of course with 10 men, he strayed away from Robben, as the Dutchman volleyed United out of the Champions League !

*9  Antonio Valencia had an outstanding performance. Setting-up two of The Reds three goals. He is now well and truly a vital part of the club. He also got back to tackle the ever so ugly Ribery !

*2  Michael Carrick one of the, if not the, worst performances of his career. Got a bang in the head, and after that he let Bayern in on goal, he slipped when Ivica Olic scored, and after that he played brutal !

*8  Darron Gibson the Irishman played a blinder on Wednesday night, he built-up attack again and again. He scored very early on to warrant his inclusion, but worked all night long, until he was subbed.

*7  Darren Fletcher well, what can I say, he has to be one of the best centre mid’s in the World right now. He, along with Gibby, started a string of attacks, and Fletch got back to tackle aswell.

*10  Luis Nani probably his best performance in a United shirt so far. Scored two, and was very, very, very unlucky not to have scored a hat-trick. He also showed some Usain Bolt style sprinting !

*8  Wayne Rooney it was a truly heroic performance from Roo. Limping around, he was involved in all three of The Reds goals; The first, he set-up Gibby; the second, he passed a long-ball out to Valencia, who cued it for Nani; and third, he let it run for the Portuguese to earn himself a brace ! – Roo was of course kicked and kicked by Bayern, targeting his vulnerable ankle

Substitutes;

*6  John O’Shea (for Rooney, ’55) the Bayern game was his first game since early November, he played well, but you could notice the lack of playing time. Once he is fit, he could be pivotal to The Reds’ Title Race…

*1  Dimitar Berbatov (for Carrick, ’80) Sorry, but this was an utterly useless performance from the £30 Million sack of potatoes, Carrick was better left alone !

*5  Ryan Giggs (for Gibson, ’81) Couldn’t do much at all, but tried. With 10 minutes left everyone roared for a late winner – espically now that Giggs was on, as he played in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern… but sadly it wasn’t a fairytale ending !

What game were you watching?

I couldn’t hear anyone roaring for a late winner, or indeed anyone roaring at all.

All I could hear in the last 10 mins were the Bayern supporters. Actually, all I could hear for most of the second half were the Bayern supporters.

A few “Oooooaarrrrrryyaaaaa” in the first half does not an atmosphere make.
