Mike Phelan Wants Recovery 02/12/2010
Assistant manager Mike Phelan has called for United’s youngsters to recover from their 4-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham on Tuesday. The Reds fielded a weakened team against The Hammers in the Carling Cup Quarter Finals, and paid the ultimate price – getting knocked-out… Heading into the game at Upton Park, United had not lost a single of their last 29 games. Following the 7-1 hammering of Blackburn Rovers over the weekend, The Reds were looking to progress into the semi-finals of the League Cup. However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s crop of youngsters failed to impress – losing by four goals to nil. Mike Phelan told the press: “Some of the defending was naïve. There are lessons to be learned from the defending point of view with individual players and hopefully they will take something from that. You can learn from defeats and we need them to learn quickly. They are quality players but they are young and they are going to make mistakes.” “It’s how they deal with those mistakes and how they react. So we’ll be looking in the next few days to see what character they’ve got and whether they can step up to the plate next time.” United will look to react against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on Saturday, where they have the chance to tighten their grip on the Barclays Premier League top spot.
