United Latest

CEO David Gill
David Gill (CEO) has said that United are still well able to buy, rather than sell, players. He also revealed that Wayne Rooney will be offered a new contract in the summer.

Earlier in 2009, Sir Alex admitted that they failed in their €35 Million bid to bring Karim Benzema to the club – he later left for Real Madrid for about €45 Million.

“We didn’t get Benzema but we did offer €35 Million,” admitted Gill. “Just one phone call to the States (to United’s owners, The Glazer family), saying we would like to make an offer of €35 Million and they said fine.”

“We did it, but Benzema went to Real Madrid for something like over €40 Million. Sir Alex has gone on record saying that was too much. But if I went to Joel Glazer and said ‘Sir Alex wants a particular player, can we have the money?’, the answer would be an unequivocal yes. They have demonstrated it.”

“From my own personal perspective, we have no doubt that they would support whatever we require. They will only get value back by ensuring the team continues to be successful, continues to attract exciting players and continues to produce results off the pitch.”
