EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Rio Ferdinand has spoken to United Latest on many topics surrounding Manchester United. This week, we will bring you sections of the interview bit by bit. On Monday, Rio talks about the fuss surrounding Wayne Rooney and his drawn-out contract saga…

Talking to United Latest on Monday, Rio stressed the importance of Wayne Rooney staying at the club. He said: “It was really important (for Rooney to stay). Wayne is settled at this club, he is a world class player and a big part of the team. In my heart I always knew he would stay, he is a true Red.”

Rooney had a blistering season with United last campaign, scoring 34 goals in 44 games. However, he wasn’t included in the shortlist of the prestigious ‘Ballon d’Or’ European footballers award. Ferdinand branded the snub as a ‘joke’. “I just couldn’t believe it !” he said. “It’s a joke.  He had an amazing season with United.”

Speaking on the matter of the under-performance of Rooney and other big players in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, England skipper Rio told us: “It’s not about individuals. It’s about playing as a squad and for whatever reasons it just didn’t happen for England.”

It’s good for the footballers to get behind Wazza now. Evra has done the same, and Rio is very enthusiastic about Wazza. Good to see
