It’s probably the ‘non-story’ of the year, but over the last couple of days the media has been awash with stories of a Manchester United goalkeeper stealing a pastry at a local grocery chain. David De Gea was alleged to have scoffed a doughnut at Tesco, in Altrincham, Greater Manchester without paying. CCTV footage caught the wealthy 20-year-old Spanish footballer committing ‘theft’, and he was summoned back into the store. De Gea himself explains all…. 

“Nothing really happened.” Laughed David. “Me, my cousin and a friend from Spain went to the shop, we were hungry and took the doughnuts. We we going to buy more things. I realised I didn’t have my wallet so I went out to the car to get it – nothing more – they thought that I was leaving without paying so I tried to explain to them but my English is still not very good and we were there for a while. In the end a Spanish girl arrived and we understood each other.”
 
“In the end they ended up apologising to us.” De Gea, who was rested against Norwich City in the 2-0 win at Old Trafford, added: “They made a big thing out of nothing but I took the whole thing as something funny. It is absolutely not true (that he was dropped over the doughnut). They’re not going to drop me for a doughnut. The manager is the one that decides. When he thinks it’s the right thing to do, he leaves you on the bench.”
