Wayne Rooney with Jermaine Defoe and James Milner
England hit four goals past Bulgaria on Friday evening, with Wayne Rooney setting-up all four. Spurs striker Jermaine Defoe partnered Roo up-front, and hailed the United talisman for his hat-trick, while Three Lions manager Fabio Capello said Wazza was ‘perfect’…

Rooney set-up Defoe for the opener at Wembley inside just 3 minutes. He went on to assist Defoe again before cuing to City’s Adam Johnson for England’s third. Rooney could have bagged himself a goal on a few occasions, nearly lobbing the keeper at one stage. The 24-year-old capped-off a fantastic performance by playing-in Defoe for his hat-trick.

After the 4-0 sweep-aside against a poor Bulgaria – without retired talisman Dimitar Berbatov, Defoe praised his partner. “When you play with a partner up front it takes time to gel but Wayne Rooney is a great player and if I make the runs I know he’ll find me.”

Capello also spoke highly of Wayne: “I’m really happy with Rooney’s performance. I asked him to stay in this position and he did everything perfectly that I asked him to do… he had to stay just in front of the two central midfielders and, from this position, go forward.”

“He had to have free movement. He had to get lots of touches of the ball because his quality is so good. The movement without the ball was fantastic always. Also the assists of Rooney. The position Rooney played this evening was different to what he plays usually. He did very well.”

Meanwhile Nemanja Vidic captained Serbia to a 3-0 win over the Faroe Islands, Darren Fletcher skippered Scotland to a 0-0 draw with Lithuania, Luis Nani played in Portugal’s 8-goal thriller against Cyprus – ending 4-4 and John O’Shea featured in the Rep. Of Ireland’s 1-0 victory against Armenia.

Corry Evans was Northern Ireland’s match-winner, as he scored late on in his competitive International debut to win 1-0 against Slovenia. Also, Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck and Bébé all featured for their respective nations in England’s U-21 1-0 win over Portugal’s U-21 side…
