Manchester United’s kids overran Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at Old Trafford on Monday night, with Daniel Welbeck, Oliveira Anderson and Wayne Rooney scoring the goals. Welbeck – a Manchester lad – was awarded man-of-the-match, showing that United can still produce local heroes in this modern era…
Harry Redknapp’s Spurs equalled United for 61 minutes of the Premier League opener at The Theatre Of Dreams, but The Champions showed exactly why they are just that, scoring 3 goals in less than half an hour. Welbeck was the first with a precision header, before Anderson capitalised on Danny’s backheel, and Rooney rounding-off the resounding victory with his noggin’. But the night belonged to Manchester born and bred striker, Danny Welbeck.
The 20-year-old was delighted with the win, talking the media through his goal: “I’ve been playing with Tom Cleverley ever since I was a young kid. We’ve got a good understanding, and when I saw Chris Smalling roll the ball back to Tom, I knew exactly where he was going to put the cross and thankfully I got my head onto the end of it. We’ve both been at the Academy for years and years, so to both come into the United first team is a massive achievement.”
“We’re so grateful to all the coaches we’ve had throughout the youth system and we’ll never forget them. We’ll always be grateful to them. The gaffer has built a great squad with youth and experience in abundance. You know that once you’re in that starting eleven, you’ve got to work hard to keep your place and so I think everyone’s working hard in training and doing their best to get in the starting eleven. Whoever’s chosen is going to give it their best shot.”
