Black Cats Swoop For Irish Back John O’Shea 07/07/2011
John O’Shea has completed a reported £4 Million transfer to Sunderland from Premier League Champions Manchester United, with the Republic Of Ireland defender signing a 4-year deal. O’Shea, 30, underwent a publicised medical on Wednesday and put pen to paper on a deal at the Stadium Of Light hours after fellow teammate Wes Brown did the same for former Red Devil and current Sunderland boss, Steve Bruce… The 6ft 3in Irishman has made 392 appearances for United since his 1999 debut against Aston Villa. O’Shea is known for his versatility, having played in every position for The Reds – including goal – and also springing up with 15 goals over the past 12 years. ‘Sheasy’ joined our youth team from Waterford Bohemians, and previously played 24 games on-loan for Bournemouth and Royal Antwerp, before winning 15 trophies at Old Trafford. John O’Shea says goodbye Black Cats’ gaffer Steve Bruce said: “John has been a solid, consistent part of Manchester United’s squad for well over a decade, which goes to show the fantastic pedigree of player we have signed. He is a wonderful professional both on and off the field and his wealth of experience and versatility will be great attributes for us. I’m delighted with the players we’ve been able to secure ahead of the new season.” The 70-timed-capped Rep. Of Ireland defender was thanked by Sir Alex Ferguson for his outstanding commitment to United, with Fergie saying John ‘epitomises the club’s approach as a team’. O’Shea admitted he was sad to leave England’s most successful club, but is looking forward to his new career at Sunderland. Thanks for everything mate, and good luck !
