Phil Jones In Senior England Debut 08/10/2011
United were well represented in the European Championship Qualifiers this week, as a host of matches took place over the International break. Phil Jones made his senior International debut for England, against Montenegro, as Ashley Young scored. Luis Nani also netted twice for Portugal, v Iceland... England drew 2-2 away to Montenegro, in a game that saw Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck take part. Portugal beat Iceland 5-3 at home, with Luis Nani the main man. France managed a 3-0 win over Albania, with Patrice Evra involved in a busy Friday night for The Reds. On Saturday, Darren Fletcher captained Scotland to a 1-0 victory over Liechtenstein. Meanwhile, Fabio Da Silva played for Brazil, versus Costa Rica. Phil Jones made his first appearance and start for England on Friday night, as Montenegro held The Three Lions to a 2-2 draw in Podgorica. Ash Young was on the scoresheet 10 minutes into the game, before Wayne Rooney and Young combined to provide Darren Bent with England's second in the 31st minute. However, the Eastern Europeans scored twice, in first half stoppage time and then again in second half stoppage time, to end the game 2-2. England qualified, however their concern was not over letting a 2-0 lead slip but having Wayne Rooney sent-off late in the game. The United striker was body-blocked by Miodrag Dzudovic after he miscontrolled the ball before lashing out at the Montenegrin's feet in the 73rd minute. Referee Wolfgang Stark showed no hesitation in brandishing a straight red card to Rooney. The 25-year-old will now miss at least one game for England in the Euro 2012 Finals. ![]() Red card: Wayne Rooney Although it was thought Rooney has come out of his immaturity, it was no surprise to see him losing his temper, as just before the game he found out that his father - Wayne Rooney Snr - and uncle - Ritchie Rooney - were arrested on suspicion of betting fraud. It clearly got to Wayne Jnr. Fabio Capello hit-out at Rooney in the aftermath of the game, but the manager should not have played Wazza due to the afore mentioned family reasons. United supporters expressed their anger with Capello on Friday night for not standing-up for his own player who he chose to play despite. In better news, Luis Nani scored a brace for Portugal as they beat Iceland 5-2 in the Euro Qualifiers. Pat Evra played for France in defence in their classy dismantling of Albania and Fabio also featured for Brazil in their 1-0 friendly win over Costa Rica, but both picked-up minor injuries.
