Wes Could Have Been A Red 01/09/2011
Wes Sneijder stays with Inter Milan this season, but he has reflected on what could have been a record transfer to Manchester United. The 27-year-old Dutch talisman was destined for a £35 Million move to Old Trafford, but he says the Italians decided to keep him after selling Samuel Eto'o... According to Sneijder, the hurdle that wasn't jumped was to do with Internazionale and not the salary that United were offering him. However, many believe his agent demanded too high a wage that eventually spelled an end to The Reds' interest in one of the world's best midfielders. Wesley admitted after the 11pm Wednesday transfer deadline that discussions took place with United, but that Sir Alex Ferguson was not involved in the initial contact. Sneijder explained: "I just felt that it was close, and yes, I thought I was going because we had several talks. The situation was such that Inter had to sell a player; Eto'o or me, and indeed there was interest. Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world, so it did not seem a bad thing - but at the same time I do not want to leave Inter. Italy is great for me, and I cannot exclude that Manchester United got that feeling." "But, for me a move was not an absolute must and there were a few things which meant it did not happen. For me, it was not so much a financial issue, my feeling was that I was simply feeling very good at Inter, I love the club but also the Italian culture and the people, it fits me." Wesley concluded. Although it is believed Sir Alex had a keen interest in Sneijder, the player himself added: "No, Alex Ferguson and I have never spoken... So far." Shame. Commentsdickhead 01/09/2011 4:43pm
wtf is wrong with transferring this guy --" Borba 01/09/2011 4:58pm
I think sir alex didnt want to be a situation like dimitar spend a lot of money on 27 year old player then find out his style dosent fit United style of play. Houfanne 01/09/2011 6:31pm
I agree with Borba..we spend alot of money to sign Sneijder meaning one of Anderson or cleverly will be replaced only to find that Sneijder doesn't suit us. Plus I feel that as much as sneijder is a star player, his arrival would mayb dampen the incredible team spirit we hav at United. Cleverely and Anderson hav worked hard and Sneijder's arrival would definitely mean less playin time for one of them.. GeorgeJ 01/09/2011 6:32pm
there is no way Sneijder's way of playing would not fit at OT,these guy refused to bring in 1 of the current best attacking midfielders to OT.Now we are just left with Cleverly,Anderson,Fletcher...none of these have the ability of bringing to life what Sneijder commands. Mikeyy 01/09/2011 7:32pm
Georgej...how do anderson and cleverly not??ther young snijder is 27 cleverly expashly (cant spell) has lookd amazin and fitted in brill give him 5 mur years heel be world class so to not have confidence in our younger players u must not be a real supporter snijder is a amazin player no doubt and wud have bin a great sighnin but he not cum so forget him we got young players cumin up lyk we did wit becks scholes n so on have faith Borba 01/09/2011 7:53pm
@George i was just saying look at dimitar shawsy 01/09/2011 8:16pm
to george j i agree with everything u said fella we needed him think its just a title challenge this season forget europe Nick7 01/09/2011 9:45pm
Cleverley is 100% pure class l33bo 01/09/2011 10:16pm
we need to concentrate on europe aswell guys all comps this year fa cup league champ league bobby united 02/09/2011 1:48am
Despite the high spirit that we hace started the current campaign with. I am sure neither Anderson nor Cleverly has what it takes to conquer Europe. The argument is that these guys are young while Sneider is 27. Let's not forget what youth and the share persuit of it has done to Arsenal.....now they had to run out and spend on two 29 year olds. Team chemistry will not be affected. Ashley Young just came and he is fitting in well.........so if we got Sneider with all his experience. That is exactly what our midfield needs. Oh come on, transfer deadline is over and there are still talk on Sneijder. I don't buy that crap he had talks with United and almost join. If he was really into football and likes United, he could have just sign on the dotted line. I hope SAF has plans for this season and I like the setup with the young players. But I also have my concerns on these players burning out and will eventually lead to injuries. Will pogba and morrison be part of the squad? Redphix 02/09/2011 7:34am
If he had really wanted it he could of handed in a transfer request !!! I like a lot would have loved to seen him in United's CM but not to be! We all just need to get behind this very promising team we have this season and see what unfolds ...United! Mohd zaki7 03/09/2011 4:33am
Whatever it is Wes, if what the story being released by the press that you want the salary you command is true, pls don't come to Man UTd as we don't need you. You have to prove to us that you can fit with the system we're playing then you can "DEMAND". Guy 03/09/2011 10:39am
