Wesley Sneijder is not seen as an 'ideal' replacement for Paul Scholes, Sir Alex Ferguson has told Italian media. United were chasing Sneijder's signature over the summer, but the proposed transfer with Inter Milan collapsed. The 27-year-old was thought to have been Ferguson's no.1 choice after Scholsey retired... Only Spain and Barcelona midfield duo Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta would be capable of succeeding Paul Scholes' role at Old Trafford, according to Sir Alex. The gaffer was in the hunt for a number of central players in the transfer window, but did not bring in a mid despite the incessant speculation. Wes Sneijder admitted that he thought he was bound for The Red Devils, but confirmed he will stay at Inter Milan for the foreseeable future. In Rome midweek, Sir Alex told press in Italy: "Sneijder is not the ideal replacement for Scholes. He's a fantastic player, but he was not who we were looking for to replace Scholes. Only Xavi and Iniesta are comparable to Scholes." Speaking of youth replacing Paul, Fergie said: "It's very easy for me because I always look forward. There is no doubt about who is the manager of United. I am the coach: today, tomorrow and the day after." "I can work in the short and long term. Of course, it becomes very difficult to separate from a player who has built a family relationship. But I have to focus on young players and try out other teams, to find someone equal or better than those who left." It is understood that wage demands from Sneijder's party were a put-off for Chief Executive David Gill, who spent almost £60 Million on David De Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young this summer.
