The French prove too good for a weak Manchester United XI in a Charity gala event in Monaco...
Olympique De Marseille defeated a Manchester United Select XI on Tuesday night in the French Principality of Monaco, where up to 20,000 fans raised funds for the Pascal Olmeta's un sourire, un espoir pour la vie ('a smile, a hope for life') Charity. Seven Red Devils - managed by Sir Alex Ferguson - were present at the Stade Louis II, which saw a large crowd considering the state of Monaco is home to only approximately 35,000 people...
Sir Alex brought seven United footballers to Fontvieille, Monaco on Tuesday in aid of former goalkeeper Pascal Olmeta's children's Charity, based in France. Patrice Evra, Paul Pogba, Ji-Sung Park, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley all travelled and featured in the game, which was ultimately won 8-2 by Marseille, albeit with little or no familiar faces in the Manchester United XI towards the final stages of the match.
Prince Albert II Of Monaco got the game started when he showed-off some skills on the pitch, before taking a seat beside United XI manager Sir Alex in the dugout. Although not a formal nor official Manchester United fixture, the event was broadcast on many major European television channels. Former Reds keeper Fabien Barthez began in goal, while the likes of ex-attacker David Ginola and French pop-star Matt Pokora playing for United.
Nicolas N'Koulou and Jordan Ayew opened the scoring for Marseille, but quick-fire strikes from Welbeck and Cleverley (both assisting one another) drew the game level 2-2 at the interval. However, with the withdrawal of household Red Devils' names, the French finished-up barnstorming winners. Benoit Cheyrou, Alou Diarra, Ayew and Loic Remy all made it onto the scoresheet, delighting the crowd at the scenic Stade Louis II.
