Gabriel Obertan signs for Newcastle United on a 5-year contract
French winger Gabby Obertan leaves Manchester United for St. James' Park...

Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan has joined Newcastle United on a permanent, 5-year contract following a successful medical. The 22-year-old's time has come to an end at Old Trafford, after scoring just 1 competitive goal in 28 matches. The Magpies have vowed to take Obertan under their wing in a £3.25 Million transfer, and manager Alan Pardew believes the Frenchman can rediscover himself and take the Barclays Premier League by storm.

Obertan joined The Reds from Bordeaux in the summer of 2009, following a loan spell at Lorient. He signed a 4-year deal in a move worth £3 Million to the Ligue 1 side. In his two seasons with United, Gabby managed just 1 goal in less than 30 caps. To date he has made 11 appearances for France U-21's, scoring once, having already competed for his nation's U-19, U-18, U-17 and U-16 sides. Obertan played for Paris and Clairefontaine in his youth career.

"I did not need to think too hard about coming here," Obertan told Newcastle's website. "I enjoyed my time at Manchester United, but at a club that size there is so much competition. There's a lot of competition here too but I am looking forward to a fresh start. Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world but Newcastle is a massive club in England so I'm looking forward to making my debut in front of the fans I've heard so much about."

Pardew was equally excited: "Gabriel is a player I've watched for the last couple of seasons since he arrived at United. He has great pace and excellent technique and he has improved his power in the last 12 months and is ready now to make a real impact in the Premier League. His best years are ahead of him which is exactly what we want at this club, and with the backing of our magnificent fans I'm sure he will prove an excellent signing for us."

Good luck to him. When he played he really did his best. Spent more time on the bench though. Good move for him to develop his skills. Wish carrick could go too.

Good luck to Gaby, at another time he may have broke into the team but competition for wingers is tough with so many great players vying for 2 positions. As for Carrick, didn't he have a fantastic 2nd half of the season last year? He's never been a box to box player ala Sweinstieger or Modric, but he plays the holding midfielder role well which is what the manager asks him to do. Also Sean 123 didn't you also claim Nasri and Sanchez would sign for us? No real points for you regarding Sneidjer either, as it's been no secret for the last 2 seasons Fergie has been an admirer and needed creativity

I have and always will be a utd fan, I have been at so many home games this season and not been impressed by carrick don't get me wrong he is a good player but has been below required standard too long now, I have also heard the Stretford end boo johnny Evans but I believe he is learning, as carrick he should be teaching. Just my opinion but don't question my loyalty , I am true most of my family support the bin dipper scouse shite and my wife is a city fan. I think if I put up with that and still stand proud to be a utd fan I deserve respect

I would be 99% sure those "supporters" complaining about Michael Carrick don't have the foggiest what his role in the United team actually entails.
