Boss Has Faith In David De Gea As No.1 13/08/2011
David De Gea has featured for Manchester United in wins over Barcelona and Manchester City (among others) this summer, but despite his clear cut quality the newspapers have jumped on his back. Sir Alex Ferguson maintains that he is United's long term replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar... De Gea joined The Reds from Atletico Madrid this summer for a fee close to £20 Million, cited as the club's main successor of retired Dutch legend Van Der Sar. The 20-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has conceded four goals in four games, in wins over Chicago Fire, FC Barcelona, New York Cosmos and Manchester City. He was beaten by Cory Gibbs, Thiago Alcantara, Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko, but his world class saves were overlooked. The press like to knock people down, and Sir Alex knows better than anyone that due to the fact his team are one of the best in the world, the media try to catch them out as much as possible. "The long-term view is De Gea, it's the reason we bought him, we’re giving him a chance. Anyone who’s criticising any goalkeeper when these free-kicks come in, all the defenders are converging on top of him, they have no chance because the delivery is so good." "On the second goal last week, he was stepping forward and then he took a step back and he got a bit unbalanced. It’s the same with Joe Hart, and interestingly enough and there was no criticism of him for the goal !... It wasn’t a goalkeeper's mistake, more of a technical mistake in terms of his feet. We didn’t expect that and he won't be doing that again, it’s just one of these things. The ball did move a bit, maybe about two feet. He’ll be fine." Ferguson revealed that De Gea will start in goal against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, in United's first call to defend their 'Premier League Champions' status. "He’s learning a lot of things," the gaffer added of David. "He’s doing very well with his English, he’s taking it on board very well. His language teacher is delighted with him. Eric Steele - the goalkeeping coach - is also pleased with him. He’s getting his communication across bit-by-bit..." Commentssimpson 13/08/2011 5:05pm

Agreed mate! You can say he could have done better with 2 goals conceded to shitty but had a solid game otherwise. He's also good with his feet. George saint Pierre 13/08/2011 8:39pm
Don't worry about it,the press and especially Liverpool fans amongst others have looked at our squad and already started shitting themselves coz they know just how good it is!they are all clutching at straws to find a weakness so they've gone for the big mans successor in de gea, they were probably out stealing or signing on when he was on tele starring for athletico last season, wouldn't worry too much about it,he's the right choice for utd and that will be proven time and time again this season and seasons to come! if messi scores a long range goal against manu it is a great goal Ranks 14/08/2011 8:33am
He's a young keeper and I'm expecting a few mistakes this season but I'm also expecting him to have some great performances and show the top quality he really is. There was no mention of the couple of great saves he made 2nd half against City, just the errors, but if a striker makes a mistake it's forgot about and if a keeper makes one it's forever cast up as it usually leads to a goal. The guy will be quality as long as he's given a chance to learn and adopt to the PL, but something tells me they will be looking to get him, so prove the doubters wrong Vickie 14/08/2011 11:42am

Distribution good, was a mistake for Dzeko goal(same as VDS was at fault with bad positioning for Messi goal) but he's got the mistakes out of the way early hopefully and it did set the stage for the comeback vs city which is always a nice way to beat them! l33bo 14/08/2011 4:52pm

He is still young.. Just give him some time and he will be ok.. anyway why bother as long as we win every game he involve with :) Bill McNeal 16/08/2011 1:01am
Once he has a better understanding of the team, the league and the language, we will see him bloom into a world class goalkeeper. This can only come with time, ergo we need to have a lot of patience with him. Comments are closed. |
