Edwin Van Der Sar bowed out of professional football in style, as over 50,000 packed into the Amsterdam Arena in Holland for the 40-year-old's last appearance as a goalkeeper. Firstly, Edwin's son Joe competed with Manchester United U-13's against AFC Ajax Amsterdam U-13's, then Van Der Sar got his own gloves on for Ajax Amsterdam (1995) against Netherlands (1998), before playing the current Ajax crop with his own Select 'Dream Team'...

On front of a massive crowd, Ajax U-13's were held to a 2-2 draw by United U-13's in a short match, as Joe Van Der Sar (Edwin's son) kept goal and Melle Meulensteen (Rene's son) played in midfield for The Red Devil's Academy side. Afterwards, Edwin Van Der Sar kept a clean sheet for Ajax (of 1995) as they beat Holland (of 1998) 1-0 thanks to a wonderful Marc Overmars strike. Louis Van Gaal and Guus Hiddink were the two managers for the tie.

But the main event saw Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney, plus Gary Neville and Louis Saha feature along with some of Europe's best players past and present in Edwin's Select XI 'Dream Team', who faced the current Ajax team. Sir Alex Ferguson and Rene Meulensteen were joint managers, with Sir Bobby Charlton watching on from the stands. Coaching for Ajax as normal was Frank De Boer.

Saha put the Dream Team into the lead on 32 minutes thanks to Rio's ball, before a Rodney Sneijder rebound was converted past Van Der Sar by Derk Boerrigter to draw the game level on 42 minutes. However, Giggs and Rooney combined to provide Dennis Bergkamp with the winner to end Edwin Van Der Sar's footballing career on a high note less than 10 minutes to go. Many other world football stars and celebrities were present at the Testimonial.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson coy over potential arrival of Wesley Sneijder: We always try to improve but there's nothing concrete yet

The Scot hints at a possible move for the Dutch playmaker and suggests that Edwin van der Sar could return to Old Trafford, potentially as a coach, after taking a year out

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has remained coy on speculation linking Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder with the club.

The Serie A club's CEO Ernesto Paolillo revealed earlier on Wednesday that the Italian outfit would consider any major bids for the Dutch midfielder.

With the signings of David de Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young so far this summer, the Premier League champions have already made successful moves to replace Edwin van der Sar and Gary Neville. Now Sneijder is been touted as a possible replacement for Paul Scholes, though Ferguson has remained tight-lipped on the situation.

"Well, we always try to improve. But at this moment there is nothing concrete," he said.

Ferguson also took the opportunity to praise Van der Sar, suggesting that he should have made a move for the Dutchman earlier in his career.

"He had a great career because of his character," he added. "His level of performance for such a long time is amazing. He is a great human. I was just saying to [Louis] Van Gaal that Van der Sar always had good words during the half-time. When [Peter] Schmeichel left I should have taken him right away. But that was my fault. I'm happy we did after all."

The United boss also added that he would like to see the Dutchman involved with the club in some capacity in the future.

"I think there is a future for him at Man United," the Scot continued. "He will be an ambassador for the club anyway. Now he will take a year off. After that he will make his decision."

I agree its the system.. I think for awhile, the youth system was quite bad considering there's almost no one who made it from the youth squad after class 92...brown etc..

But passed few years, United did right by re-employing the Ex players who retired, and I thought that's a great move. I believe we will be there soon, before the old man retires!

So long Edwin you will be sorely missed as you are a true United legend and I hope you still play some part in football in the future whether you become a pundit or something else, I wish you the best of luck for the future.
