United Hit Seattle Sounders For Seven 21/07/2011
Match Report - Seattle Sounders 0-7 Manchester United Competition: Pre-Season Friendly Kick-Off & Date: 7pm, Wednesday, 20th July 2011 Venue: CenturyLink Field, Washington, US (Away) Attendance: 67,052 Manchester United were at first equalled by a spirited Seattle Sounders side, but a second half goal rush proved that 'The Rave Green' were no match for the mighty Red Devils. The second tour game in The USA finished 7-0 to the visitors, with goals from Michael Owen, Mame Biram Diouf, Wayne Rooney, Ji-Sung Park and Gabriel Obertan putting on an entertaining match at the full-to-capacity CenturyLink Stadium in Washington State. Anders Lindegaard started between the sticks for Sir Alex Ferguson's starting XI, with Rafael Da Silva, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra forming the backline. Luis Nani and Ashley Young were the wingmen, while Oliveira Anderson and Ryan Giggs acted as central midfielders. Michael Owen started up-front alongside Italian striker Federico 'Kiko' Macheda in a two-pronged forward attack. It was too early for David De Gea or Phil Jones. Seattle Sounders, headed by coach Sigi Schmid, put United to the test in the opening stages. The lime green home team weren't going to sit back and let the visitors - in their new black and blue away kit - take a walk in the park. Anders Lindegaard was almost caught-out by Freddy Montero, but it was Michael Owen who scored the game's first goal. Ash Young cleverly spotted the run of Pat Evra, who crossed the ball for Owen's opening header. Sounders goalie Kasey Keller was called into action on a number of occasions, with Young tearing the defence apart on the left-hand side. America's North West soccer city were right behind their men, but it was United who went down the tunnels in the lead at half time. Ben Amos, Ji-Sung Park, Wayne Rooney and Mame Diouf arrived on the scene for the second half, sprucing-up The Reds' attacking formation which had lacked a certain sharpness. Owen had missed a sitter in the closing stages of the first period, but there was no such incident when Mame Diouf rounded substitute goalkeeper Terry Boss following Luis Nani's lob. Wayne Rooney then compounded Seattle's downfall with a rifling shot into the roof of the net on 51 minutes. Nani again was the giver, with the 24-year-old Portuguese flanker working well on the right. Jonny Evans, Fabio Da Silva and Gabby Obertan then entered. Ben Amos dealt with efforts from Mike Fucito and Pat Noonan, with the latter hitting the crossbar in another attempt. But with 20 minutes left, the floodgates opened... Michael Carrick made an appearance, as Ji-Sung Park spotted Rooney in the penalty area, who took one touch and stroked the ball into the far corner of the goals. Sir Alex was clearly content with his side's performance, but there was even more goals to come. Last week's match against New England Revolution didn't prove too tricky - with a 4-1 victory in United's favour - but despite the game in Seattle outscoring the previous one in Boston, The Sounders had originally put up a fight against the Premier League Champions. But in the closing stages, that wasn't the case. Gabriel Obertan picked-out Park for the fifth goal of the friendly, and the South Korean's second goal of the 2011 summer tour. Wazza got his hat-trick on 72 minutes, thanks to Obertan's work. Amos had a little work to do in goal, before Gabby Obertan grabbed a well deserved goal 2 minutes before the end as Rooney turned provider. It was an epic finish to a fantastic pre-season event, where five goalscorers netted seven goals. Although Dimitar Berbatov was ruled-out with an ankle injury, only Rio Ferdinand suffered a minor knock in a clean affair, managed by referee Jeff Hosking. The 67,000 crowd was dubbed the largest attendance to a soccer game in the North West Pacific... Not bad, as United roll into Chicago, Illinois on Thursday morning in preparation for Saturday night's 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge match against MLS Eastern Conference side Chicago Fire, where the 61,000 seater Soldier Field is the venue for Manchester United's third US Tour game. If it's half as good as Wednesday's, it'll be a success ! United Team: Anders Lindegaard (Ben Amos '46), Rafael Da Silva, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic (Jonny Evans '55), Patrice Evra (Fabio Da Silva '55), Luis Nani (Gabriel Obertan '55), Oliveira Anderson, Ryan Giggs (Ji-Sung Park '46), Ashley Young (Michael Carrick '65), Michael Owen (Wayne Rooney '46), Federico Macheda (Mame Biram Diouf '46). This wasn't even the full team for Seattle but still good shooting practise - Sanchez has agreed Barca deal and will sign Monday and the glut of great players in Spain means the premier league may not be the best in the world any longer. Know City are spending big but we need a top signing still cause though SAF buys well we have lost a lot of experience anonymous 21/07/2011 8:43pm
is there no news on sneijder? Samuel 21/07/2011 9:38pm
I thought Oliveira Anderson was excellent last night. As was Giggs Joseph. As for Luis Nani, he reminds me of a young Edson Pele. Eamon 21/07/2011 10:13pm

Jershey, watch your mouth. Sean is a highly-respected poster on here. He's been around since Day 1. Clarky 22/07/2011 5:21pm
Also, Sean has top contacts in the media and he's been right about things before. Utd Needs Someone 22/07/2011 8:04pm
i'm with Jershey. Clarky 22/07/2011 9:41pm
Sounds like you ARE Jershey. Migsy 22/07/2011 9:43pm
While I respect seans opinion I doubt he knows the inside story. Half the journalists working for the tabloids only guess and speculate about who we are signing so I'll take it all with a large dose of salt. Borba 22/07/2011 11:09pm
@jershey are from New Jersey? Marc 23/07/2011 11:06am
Wesley Sneijder will be a big signing and assurance of Jersey sales.. and everyone will go gaga over that for quite awhile. But, 50million cash plus 200k++ weekly wages, do we really need another ACM? True Red 23/07/2011 12:13pm
I'd say Daniel De Rossi or Jack Rodwell for the DCM role. Me 23/07/2011 2:16pm
I think it's too late to make a bod for de Rossi because city already have... Bren 23/07/2011 8:32pm
I'll give u a inside view sean - confirm this with ur sources Comments are closed. |
