Sir Alex Ferguson says he would have understood if Dimitar Berbatov decided to quit United following his exclusion from the Champions League Final squad. The Red Devils lost 3-1 to Barcelona, in a game where the club's top goalscorer failed to make the starting XI or the substitutes bench...
Berbatov scored 21 goals in 42 games for the Premier League Champions last season, but despite his unparalleled goalscoring record, he was omitted from United's Champions League Final squad in the 3-1 defeat at the hands of Barca in Wembley Stadium, London. The 30-year-old Bulgarian was unhappy, but now it looks as though Berba will remain a Red after manager Sir Alex citied that the striker 'will be in his plans' next campaign.
"I'd understand that," Fergie stated. "But you could say that about them all. There were seven or eight players disappointed at not being involved in the Final. Berbatov will be all right, his training has been terrific and he's a good person, he's a nice guy. I don't pick the same team every week, do I ?... I've only done that once in the last three years. So they understand it's the squad that wins the games and wins the cups and I’ve got a good squad."
With the Javier Hernandez revelation last term, Sir Alex admits it was difficult to leave the 23-year-old Mexican forward out of the starting line-up in important matches. "Chicharito hit such good form that you had to put him in every game. It was unfortunate for Berbatov. It didn't make him a bad player, he was just an unlucky player." Hernandez is expected to arrive in America this week after an extended holiday during the pre-season period.
