Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has agreed a new 5-year contract with the club, after his outstanding debut season at Old Trafford. The 21-year-old made 34 appearances for The Premier League Champions last campaign, and his new, lucrative deal signals manager Sir Alex Ferguson's approval. Smalling has exceeded expectations in his first test, and is well on his way to becoming a viable replacement for Rio Ferdinand. Smalling signed from Fulham in January 2010, but only began his career with The Red Devils that summer. As defenders John O'Shea and Wes Brown depart The Theatre Of Dreams, 6ft 4in Smalling commits his long-term future to the world's biggest club. The England U-21 centre back has been tipped - alongside fellow club and country teammate Phil Jones - to become captain of both United and England seniors. The former Maidstone back has worked his way through the England ranks, representing England Schools U-18's, U-20's and now U-21's. Smalling has played 14 games for his current age group, and has scored twice on International duty. Since his competitive debut in the Community Shield triumph over Chelsea, Smalling has appeared on 34 occasions under Sir Alex, and has also bagged himself a goal in a solid first term at the club. The gaffer told ManUtd.Com: "Chris has been outstanding since joining us from Fulham last year, he is an extremely talented young defender, he’s quick, strong and reads the game well, he is a great asset to the team." Smalling himself added: "This is a great club and, in the short time I have been here, I have already achieved more than I could have ever expected to. I am looking forward to a long and successful career at Manchester United." Smalling's 5-year signature will keep him at United until the summer of 2016. He is due to meet the squad in The United States on July 11th, after being given a prolonged sabbatical (beyond the July 4th regroup) for his work with England U-21's in the 2011 UEFA European Championships in Denmark. This earned Smalling a place in the 2011 'UEFA Official All-Star Team' for Under-21 football. Good on you, Chris ! CommentsSean 123 Mufc 08/07/2011 12:57pm

Sir Bobby Charlton has been speaking to Sky Sports News about Samir Nasri. "I can't talk about anything," says the Reds legend. "He's a nice player, a good player but I'll leave all that, the negotiations, to the powers that be here and, if he's a good player and wants to come and play for us, he'll have to realise there is something you have to remember here. That's the history of the club. I think if he knows Manchester United are coming for him, he won't worry about anything else." Hammed 08/07/2011 3:41pm

We all agree that we hate the glazers as owners but atleast the do what Sir Alex wants. May the last two seasons Sir Alex didn't want to head up with Real Madrid in the market. This year seems to me Real Madrid isn't really buying yet and good Chance for Sir Alex to buy who or what he wants before the real heavy hitter comes to play aka Real Madrid and the glazers are letting him do the the job. The one thing I give credit to them is when Sir Alex buys or go after players the Glazers don't get in his way that's the only credit I give them but hurry up and sell to the Qatar Royal family. When are you people going to learn to trust my information? Sir Alex has no intention of selling Nani. Inter will accept straight cash for Sneijder and he will be a Man Utd player by the end of the month. This information is coming from the sources at the very top. Adewale Mulumbu 09/07/2011 4:14am
