Dimitar Berbatov with the Barclays Premier League trophy
Top goalscorer Dimitar Berbatov has said he aims to fulfil the remaining year on his United contract, whilst denying claims that he was absent at Wembley Stadium for the European Cup Final, after being omitted from the squad. Meanwhile, Ji-Sung Park and Antonio Valencia are in-line for new deals...

Berbatov, who finished the season as joint-top-goalscorer in the Barclays Premier League, has told native Bulgarian media that he intends to remain a United footballer for the new campaign at the least. The former International skipper joined Old Trafford from Tottenham Hotspur in September 2008, costing £30.75 Million, and signing a 4-year deal - keeping him with The Red Devils until September 2014 at the earliest (provided he isn't sold !).

However, speculation over Berba's future at the club has intensified after it was reported he stormed out of Wembley - ahead of the 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League Final last weekend - when he was told by Sir Alex Ferguson that he wouldn't even take a place on the bench. The 30-year-old has denied these claims, and hopes to stay at the world's biggest club after a high-scoring term of 21 goals in 42 games for the League Champions.

Berba speaks with the press
"I am a Manchester United player and I will be glad to fulfil my contract. Everyone has some difficulties, but I have always fought and will keep fighting for a prime place. I never gave up in my life. The truth is that I was in the dressing rooms and watched the game on TV. I was just so very disappointed and 'ashamed' that I was left out of the squad. I cannot hide my emotions and I did not want people to see how sad I was." Berbatov said.

"But, this was the manager's decision. The pain from Wembley cannot make me give up but only fight more. I am a Manchester United player and I will be glad to fulfil my contract. Everyone has some difficulties but I have always fought and will keep fighting for a prime place. I never gave up in my life. United is the highest step for me. Everything after that will be a step down. I want to stay and help win the 20th title, which I am certain is on its way."

According to sources within the club, Chief Executive David Gill and his staff are currently in dialogue with representatives of 30-year-old South Korean attacker Ji-Sung Park (who has one year left on his deal) and agents of 25-year-old Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia (who has two years to go until his arrangement expires). The Reds are 'hopeful' in both cases, with 'image right issues' to sort-out in Valencia's contract.
