Manchester United will complete the €21 (£18.3) Million signing of 20-year-old Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea this summer, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed. The young Spaniard will replace outgoing stopper Edwin Van Der Sar, who played his final game at Old Trafford on Sunday... Queried by the press in the aftermath of Gary Neville's Testimonial on Tuesday, Sir Alex admitted that United's replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar is indeed David De Gea - who has been the subject of intense media speculation over the past season - ever since The Red Devil's flying Dutchman announced his end of season retirement from professional football. De Gea, along with Anders Lindegaard, will attempt to fill VDS's void. De Gea, 20, is seen as one of the most promising goalies in Europe, and comes at a price of €21 (£18.3) Million. The Atletico Madrid youngster has kept 14 clean sheets in 45 appearances for the La Liga side this season, brining to 24 his number of unblemished matches in 83 games. De Gea has UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup winners medals, and was also a star man in Spain's UEFA European U-17 Football Championship win in 2007. The 6ft 3½in keeper - who currently represents Spain's U-21 side - was complimented on his playing style by Sir Alex this week. "We've been working on this for quite a while, we identified him a while back as one we should go for. He's a young goalkeeper, very quick, with good composure and presence. He's an outstanding replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar. We were looking for someone with the same types of qualities." "One great quality Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability." Fergie added. "David De Gea is very similar that way..." The deal is expected to be officially announced on bank holiday Monday, May 30th. CommentsSean 123 MUFC 24/05/2011 11:39pm
