'Football Governance Is The Key'... 04/02/2011
Manchester United supporters have long been campaigning for a chance in ownership, but The Reds aren't alone... The face of football governance must change for the greater good, and that means that every fan - not just United followers - will benefit. Andy Simpson, from The Glazer-Out Blog is here to explain... Report By: Andrew Simpson, The Glazer-Out Blog A lot of Manchester United fans are currently thinking that the only way The Glazers and their debt can be moved on is if certain Middle Eastern countries decide to invest in our club. Many more fans also think The Independent Manchester United Supporters Trust let them down via The Red Knights and now want to hear nothing more from them or at least don’t trust them... That’s fair enough, it's understandable but the next stage of the fight isn’t about a bid, it’s not about Qatar or The Red Knights. It's about football governance and its about football ownership. Currently there is large inquiry into the way football in the United Kingdom is governed and this didn’t just come about overnight. It’s down the fact the largest supporters trust in the United Kingdom, maybe in the whole of Europe has been working hard behind the scenes. A large debate of MPs was called up some months back now but a large part of this was our trust asking it's members to e-mail their local MPs. Many MPs from all over the country commented about the problems in football. Not just with Manchester United, but their local clubs. This debate was the largest debate Westminster Hall had ever seen so the Trust getting it's members to contact 97% of MPs shows just how powerful we can be. Day one was a debate and now its under an official inquiry. My view is: forget The Red Knights, forget Qatar, if as Manchester United fans we really want to change football, now isn’t the time to be looking for news on a rich Billionaire. It's time to be supporting your supporters Trust. Even if your aren’t a Manchester United fan, this matters. You could be a Chester, Dundee, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Leeds or a Liverpool fan, for all clubs this is important. The Football League doesn’t even know who owns Leeds United ! That’s the state this countries' football is in. The Trusts and others are in a position of very rare power. The power for people to listen. This has gone from a debate, to MPs over the last couple of weeks visiting Germany to see how the German model really works. The Manchester United Supporters Trust are currently meeting with many MPs and top figures in football, such as the head of the Premier League. So as you can see the Trust wasn’t just pinning its hopes on The Red Knights and neither was I. Many others who understand agree the only real win, is a change in the rules. A Qatar takeover could be a kick in the teeth to support rights and football ownership. You address the debt in one club but ignore everything else supporter and club related. Something which stops all future takeovers using leveraged buyouts and rules where we the supporters can’t just be ill treated by owners who have never been to Old Trafford. Manchester United is owned by a man who has never been to Manchester. Do not expect the Government to introduce the German model overnight and do not expect supporters trusts to run football clubs. This isn’t what is required or what is being asked. Does the law need to change ? - No. It’s why the Governance is using The FA. Much could change. Debt rules and ownership rules, much like the rules UFEA is putting in place on finances could solve many simple issues. Our Government, the ones doing the cuts, are planning to set a plan out for football governance but also football ownership by May 2011. That is only four months, so the next time you get an e-mail from The Manchester United Supporters Trust keep a close eye on it because even with my knowledge of the subject I don’t know what will happen. Nothing could happen or we could see ourselves being presented with a percentage of the club. Don’t get carried away. Don’t think this is the answer we’ve been wishing for. This is only one part in a greater battle but supporting the Trust now to get behind this, should be far more important to all of us than any other current issue. The last thing is, The Green & Gold Campaign doesn’t represent one protest, it represents change. Change in football means change in future of Manchester United. My scarf is firmly around my neck... How do we get rid of the debt? Ranks 04/02/2011 7:49am
With the UEFA Fair Play rule coming on 1st June meaning teams must balance the books or not qualify for European competition, the only clubs who could compete is Arsenal and Spurs. With the Glaziers loan repayments haemoraging money, United may be in the nightmare position of being league champions and not playing in the Champions League. That's where the lucrative money and tv revenue comes from and if that happens United will no longer be the golden goose to the Glaziers it once was. The club will be sold to clear the debt but to billionaires or fans who knows, but the Glaziers can't keep it. It would be a dream for the fans to own the club but not impossible, after all, aren't Barcelona owned by the fans and they are currently the world club champions Mufc dan 04/02/2011 2:01pm

Didn't the United share scheme fail before as we never bought the club and the Glaziers took over?? I agree, although it's more foreign owners, I think Qatar is the more realistic, though i'd love the fans to own the club like Barcelona do Comments are closed. |
