Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill
United Chief Executive David Gill has defended the club's buying policy, saying The Red Devils would rather see a player come through the youth system and grow into a world class star than buy a ready-made mercenary. Gill also hinted at the possibility of José Mourinho replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in the distant future...

Manchester City have spent close to £350 Million on players since the takeover of the club in late 2008. They have achieved zero success to date, with the clock ticking towards 35 years of nothingness in terms of silverware for the noisy neighbours. Sir Alex Ferguson hit-out at The Citizen's 'kamikaze spending' over the summer, but City have continued to buy, and buy, and buy... with £27 Million Edin Dzeko arriving at the club last week.

"We can compete," David Gill told an Arabian business newspaper. "We can compete for top players. People say we don't, but we have bought well, and our goal at Manchester United is to make sure we develop our own players and also buy good players. Over time, if you follow United, you will know we have rarely bought the world star, we have made them world stars by playing for United, and that will continue."

"In terms of our business model, we have got debt that we didn't have before," he added. "The debt levels we have got are roughly £500 Million in bonds, the interest costs on that are roughly £45 Million, and our EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) is in the order of £100 Million, and growing. So we can easily service our debt. So we are comfortable with our business strategy and business model going forward."

David Gill was speaking in Abu Dhabi, where United delegates - including club legend Bryan Robson - launched a deal between Manchester United Soccer Schools and 'Reem Investments'. The contract sees The Red's training facilities running throughout the United Arab Emirates for the next two years by the company.

"I don't think we'd ever field a team full of foreigners. When those great players, who have been part of the team for 15-odd years retire, others will step up. Hopefully we'll have players coming through the academy who understand what being a United player means." Gill continued. "In any walk of life the key person is the man at the top. He (Sir Alex) has seen it, done it and knows what to do in particular situations".

"It's one of the strengths of the Premier League, the fact that we do distribute our money broadly. The television rights are sold collectively and distributed according to a predetermined formula."

"Sir Alex is on a rolling contract, he is on the record as saying that he will continue to manage as long as he keeps fit, so while we follow what is happening in football, I am not going to sit here today and say who we have in mind because we don't know what the time frame is. I am sure there are some other good managers around... José Mourinho a good manager."

Lets be quite clear here Gill is not to be trusted he has history!Nobody is suggesting for one minute that Manchester United have not got pedigree in producing fantastic youth and bringing them through to the First team level.Thats a given its proven, there is no reason to doubt the current group of youth players are going to be equally as successfull as their predecessors. The younger players in my opinion look brilliant and full of promise, both the Youth and the Reserves.
.
.
For Gill to spout this drivvle during the "transfer Window" which is about to close is typical of his forked tongue approach.
We know that most player of United quality will be Champions league cup tied. There are however other players of United quality outwith the UEFA jurisdiction that should be on United's radar.
Defeat this Gill? English record transfer fee *
.
Antonio Valencia £17m
Dimitar Berbatov £30.75m*
Micheal Carrick £18.6m
Wayne Rooney £27.00m*
Rio Ferdinand £27.55m*
Juan Veron £28.10m*
Rud Van Nistelrooy£19.00m*
Dwight Yorke £12.60m
Jaap Stam £10.75m*
Andy Cole £7.00m*
Roy Keane £3.75m*
Gary Pallister £2.30m*
Bryan Robson £1.50m*

Manchester United did buy World class players and competed for the absolute best, Did they not? "Something changed"

what we used to do was buy young players who are already performing to a good standard like the ones mentioned above, then turn them into world class stars. Not buy unproven at any level shite like Bebe. Sanchez and pastore were mentioned above, I would agree that these are the type of players we should be getting - young and outstanding in a top division team.

I think the glazers have gill in their pocket!!! Is SAF. There too. in the past he's allways got what he wanted in terms of players. Did rooney break the bank? Does SAF really think this team is the best he's ever made? As for home grown talent All our best players had the privilege of training and growing up with the greats from the past mentioned in an earlier post. Now were looking at loosing giggs, scholes, Vds, to mention a few. Where will the youth get there guidance from then???

David Gill has been so far up Malcolm Glazers arse he doesn't even know what day it is. His words are 'we won't buy anyone because we are using the excuse the youth team might create a great player' very poor excuse not to invest in the squad as a whole. You need your youth players but you also have to buy in the right players. United have always done it with a blend of youth, skills, experience and talent. Most of the famous names United have developed have been players in their early 20s who had either impressed against us or some Fergie picked out and got interms of money on the cheap. There are loads of them.

He is spot on with his words tho, even i agree we do need to sign big soon.
We never realy bought top world class Players if u think about it.
ronaldo, vidic, evra were unknown b4 comin to us, now look at them.
then u got giggs, scholes, beckham who we brought thru.
And then u got keane, ruud, stam, and more. All became world stars afta they spent years at united.

I think the glazers must have used up the $$ from sale of CR to repay their debt's interest. The thought of glazers making ManUtd in 500 mill pounds debt MAKES ME SICK!! We were financially stable and in 0 debts before, fuc-ing glazers!! And now we are turning into an arsenal wanna be squad. WTF
