The Week In Review... 09/08/2010
![]() As Manchester United top-off the week with a 3-1 win over Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley, Daniel Szepfalusi talks about the final week of preparation for the new season, an emerging talent and why Sir Alex Ferguson knows best... Report By: Daniel Szepfalusi, 8:45pm The Week In Review: August 2nd - 8th So we are here almost at the start of the new Premier League season, and United’s preparations are almost finished… thank God we avoided any major injuries, barring some bad luck trough the internationals on Wednesday - we should have a full squad against Newcastle United on Monday, the 16th. The only notable absentees are Rafael Da Silva (virus), Owen Hargreaves (knee again) and Anderson (rehabbing knee), with Rio Ferdinand back on the mend. I won’t say much from the game on Wednesday because the opposition was not in the same class as us, but the Community Shield victory against Chelsea was a great measure point, and if it’s any indication towards the season’s start, we all should be very encouraged by it because I never saw a United team so sharp so early in the season int he last 10 years. As the boss said on Sunday: "With the experience Chelsea have got, you have to look at them being the biggest threat. They won the league and the cup last year and I do think you have to see the team that won the league as the ones you look at. I don't see why anyone should think any different. Chelsea have the experience. You can't dismiss them." So dismantling a near complete Chelsea team with so many absent starters (Patrice Evra, Ferdinand and Rafael) is a very good sign. I don’t think we need another signing, however Fergie abandoned a training session to see Mesut Ozil’s Werder Bremen take on Fulham. We could see this as an encouraging sign, knowing the boss only goes to check out somebody if he is really interested in him and/or knows that there is a real possibility to capture somebody. I think Ozil would be a perfect fit for United, he’s fast, a great shooter, and has good vision for a player 21 years of age. However, after the performance Paul Scholes put up on Sunday (man-of-the-match) the gaffer may be hesitant to splash another £15 Million or so on Ozil. I personally think we should sign him while he’s relatively cheap, so he could learn from Paul if he hangs up his boots at the end of the season. So what do you think of the debut from Chicarito ? - I knew he was fast and agile, and moves very well without the ball from the World Cup... but his 45 minutes against Chelsea just strengthened my belief that he will be a hit in England. Despite his size, he’s not afraid to shoot, and he has a knack for goal only Ole Gunnar and Ruud had inside the box, and have I mentioned that he’s fast, really fast ? And as we all know, the gaffer understand better than anyone how to build up young players, as said by Darren Fletcher and Chris Smalling: "The manager knows what is best for Manchester United. He knows what this club is capable of and what the players can do. Younger players are a year older. The ones we brought in last season have the experience of being around for a season.” explained Fletch. "The manager is a real inspiration," said Smalling. "It is credit to how much he wants to win things. He stressed to us all before the game that he still has the joy each day to come in for training. Now he is looking to us to give something back to him in terms of winning trophies." So everything’s set for the start of the season, see ’yall next week… just a reminder, we open the season on the 16th of August against Newcastle at Old Trafford. And I will be there, giving my thoughts on the game ! Comments Comments are closed. | Loading
