Mesut Ozil Edging Closer To Reds Switch ? 12/08/2010
![]() Mesut Ozil has edged closer to becoming a Manchester United player, according to the latest reports. Earlier this week, Barcelona were said to have signed the 21-year-old German midfielder, however those reports have since been dismissed... Reports on Monday claimed Barcelona agreed an £8.3 Million deal with Werder Bremen for Ozil, who was said to have signed on a four-year deal. United fans' hearts sunk, but hopes were lifted after both clubs dissed the reports. Werder media director Tino Polster said: "There are no talks with, and no offer from FC Barcelona." While general manager Klaus Allofs said: "There is no agreement with Barca," he told reporters. "There is now a bit of movement on the issue. But I am not running backwards and forwards to the fax machine or getting sweaty palms when I check my emails to see if maybe an offer has arrived." After training, Ozil himself told Bild: "I know nothing. I have spoken to no one." Chelsea and Real Madrid were then said to be in on the act, while a bright spark discovered a player profile of Ozil on the club's official website... Once the page was brought to attention, the web went crazy. However, club journalist Nick Coppack was quick to inform us that the page was created unintentionally. "Every opposition player and every player linked in our Transfer Speculation feature is assigned an ID number in our content management system." "Because of this - and it's a technical glitch we're trying to rectify - it's possible to access a page (by trial and error of different numbers at the end of a web address) that appears to look very much like a first-team player profile. It's not. If you dig hard enough you'll also find links for just about every opposition player that's ever faced United. It doesn't mean we've signed them or we're planning to sign them." he explained. Despite the reason for the page's existence being cleared-up, many media outlets still reported the page as 'proof' that The Reds had signed Ozil. Nearly every player linked to United has their own page, which you'll find if you alter the web address. With Sir Alex Ferguson agreeing a £7.4 Million deal with Vitoria De Guimaraes for 20-year-old Portuguese striker Bebe, fans expressed their opinions on how the move would effect the Ozil situation. Some said it proves the boss has some cash to spend, other argued that Ozil wouldn't arrive as Bebe can play as an attacking midfielder as well. The rumour mill just keeps on ticking... so what do you make of all this ? CommentsGizmoj 10/08/2010 10:53am
As much as I think we need a CM with a bit more creativity it has to be looking unlikely Ozil is coming, great player potentially and a steal at that price but just doesnt look likely - hope springs eternal but I dread watching how we cope when Carrick's form dips and Fletch is trying to do the job of 2...last year should have taught us something, everyone goes on about the injuries at the back and thats a true thing but there were any number of games where we couldn't grab midfield and thats not looking any better at the mo.

Spanish press is hardly the most reliable source of information! And considering Bremen have said they'd not accept £12 million for him, I can't see how they would have accepted best part of £4million less for him a week later. Paper talk, it annoys the tits off me.

I agree - when do united ever get involved in a transfer 'saga' and win? Echo's of Ronaldinho this one, got a nasty feeling we won't sign Ozil. However, seems like we've still got as good a chance as anyone - Ozil knows nothing about Barcelona's alleged bid (below)

True, 'first time for everything' is just about all i'm clinging onto at the moment. I'd like to know more about the alleged David Gill quote - I can't see him having categorically ruled out us signing Ozil without at least one journo making a fuss...i'm going to be so pissed off if he ends up going somwhere else for a small fee.

I knew those spanish reports were pile of rubbish! well I think we will eventually sign ozil but it will be after a tussle with our london neighbours! have full faith in Fergie the Legend! if we get him then cool, but if we dont then it must be because Fergie knows that the squad he has are good enough without him. I doubt the price will be a hurdle between Ozil coming to United Lets hope he does come! fingers crossed we may be winessing another replica berba saga!

Some two-bit news station in Spain reports a rumour they probably got from a WUM and, thanks to Twitter, within seconds Ozil has "signed for Barca" and all the ABUs are jizzing themselves at the prospect of Fergie missing out on a transfer target. Honestly, you should have seen all the messages from ABUS:

I think Liverpool will come in with a 5 million bid, Chelsea will bid 10 million, Man City will offer Yaya Toure in exchange plus 40 million, we'll make a 15 million bid and then Barca come in with a 4 million bid which Bremen accept and Ozil goes there, then we here more of this "Its a dream to play for Barca" rubbish, before Anderson gets himself killed in a car crash and Scholes breaks his hip, and we HAVE to play Cleverley all season long.. You heard it here first :|

I have reiterated my support for the signing of Ozil, as I think he is a fantastic player who will eventually take on the mantle of the Ginger Prince. What irritates me in all honesty is the unecessary dithering. We should have been making efforts to get him signed up whilst Barca were persuing Fabregas - that is exactly the sort of distraction we should have taken advantage of. I have a feeling we will miss out on him, I hope I am wrong but if he claims to be a Barca fan and they approach him, there could only be one winner in this transfer tussle.

Well, whatever about RedCafe.Net, I think Fergie is really into this guy. So says the Guardian

I hope we sign him. There must be some interest by us since Fergie was watching the Fulham game - I'm not buying into the fact the was scouting the Fulham team for the EPL. Also he didn't answer the question whether we are interested in Özil or not, just got himself around it and then left the press conference.

Of course he likes Ozil ge tried to sign him 2 seasons ago. When he was asked of the Chelsea game he gave the correct answers to the questions considering the huge interest in Ozil at a bargain price.

No, no-one 'hacked' the site. It is a loophole that is you combine the 'Transfer Rumours: July' page and the player profile pages - you get a profile of a transfer rumours. Simple, but deceiving...

Those of you who were studying Chicharito's role for Mexico at the World Cup, may have been impressed by the skills of El Tri playmaker Andres Guardado. Sir Alex Ferguson was, according to caughtoffside.com, which speculates that the diminutive Deportivo La Coruna winger is a United target. How much for the 23-year-old winger? £12million, apparently

According to the newspaper, 'Chelsea are still in negotiations with Werder Bremen about a deal for Mesut Özil, despite a claim by Barcelona yesterday that they had agreed a £13 million fee for the Germany midfield player. The statement was immediately contradicted by Özil's club and Chelsea hope that the greater prospect of regular football will convince the player to move to Stamford Bridge.'
