United Agree £7.4M Deal With Striker 'Bebe' 11/08/2010

Manchester United have tonight announced they have agreed personal terms with 20-year-old Portuguese striker Tiago Manuel Dias Correia 'Bebe' from Vitoria De Guimaraes. The deal is worth a reported £7.4 Million, subject to a successful medical later this week...

The club announced at 10pm on Wednesday night that David Gill had struck a deal with Liga club, Victoria De Guimaraes, to sign Portuguese striker 'Bebe' for an undisclosed fee - thought to be in the region of £7.4 Million. Bebe was recommended by Portugal national coach, Carlos Queiroz, after the 20-year-old impressed in the CAIS Charity Cup for the homeless.

Bebe, an orphan, grew-up on the streets of Agualva-Cacém - a small Portuguese city. After initially playing for Estrala Da Amadora in the third division, Bebe was then signed by Vitoria De Guimaraes in early July, where he impressed in various pre-season games.

Sir Alex Ferguson agreed to pay Bebe's contract buy-out clause - near to seven and a half million. Bebe had played for his new club for just five weeks, but the talented front man was quickly snapped-up by The Reds, after the tip-off from Queiroz - Fergie's former assistant manager. Real Madrid were readying a bid for Bebe just this morning.

The starlet, who is set to sign on a five-year deal, may be loaned-back to Victoria SC. Bebe has not yet broke into the Portuguese International just yet, but has played for the homeless side at International level. The youngster is regarded as more of an attacking midfielder rather than a striker, which doesn't bode well for those who still want Mesut Ozil at Old Trafford...

No matter how you look at this transfer, it makes NO sense. I have two theories:

1. One of our other strikers is going to be sold soon, for a fee in excess of £7.4m (Berbatov? Owen?)

2. Berbatov is to be exchanged with Bremen for Ozil!?!?! :-O

3. Real Madrid have come in with a >£20m bid for Chicharito and we're going to make a super-fast profit. >:-(

I'd like to believe that we have £7.4 million to spend on a player we don't really need but I suspect the error in this story is the fee.

On the United official website it says the fee is "undisclosed". Did someone just make up the figure of 9 million Euros? Or should it be 0.9 million?

What about Lukaku Boys? I was sure fergie was trying to do that deal in the shadows, doesn't look like it. Nowhere does it mention that united had to pay the full buyout clause, although you would suspect they did, because the deal was done so fast, and it was kept quiet, v.few clubs do this, because they wanna drive up the fee, but if we met the release clause, there would be no need for this

I think Owen has to go now he surely cant keep up with these young pups. As for Ozil, he may be only a lil more then this transfer but I understood that he wants to play in Spain and if he couldnt get a move to Barca or Madrid then he'd rather let his contract run out at Bremen.

But aren't buyout fees usually ridiculously high (they are in Spain)? If his club have just signed him for nothing they'd surely accept far less than that?

That is a release clause, a bid of that amount automatically has to be accepted, this fee is very rarely met, not unless the buyer really wants him and the seller really does not want to sell. Bids of considerably lower amounts are often accepted, id imagine 2 mill would have done it! They wud surely take a 2 mill turnover in the space of 5 weeks

I thought buyout clauses meant that the club couldn't stop the player from leaving if someone meets the buyout amount? You don't pay that much if you agree a sale with the club, just if you want to force then to sell.

The fact that Bebe was signed by his last club on a free only 5 weeks ago, suggests that he's shown some kind of x-factor in the meantime to Quieroz/our scouts. I'm quite excited by this ..... can you all remember the LAST young portuguese player with the x-factor? :-)

To be honest, i think the Ozil deal may now be dead. We wouldn't buy this lad (regarded as a attacking midfielder) if Ozil was still going to sign.

I think a lot of people are doubting the lad before he's even played. United scouts could have been watching him for some time, or even just pre-season 4 or 5 games, if he's impressed in them, and also been recommended then he surely has something.

One thing that i would like to see is him actually given some game time. Not like a Manucho, who played a few subs appearances and then f*cked off to Spain.

@Marvin - it's highly unlikely that Bebe was bought as an alternative to Ozil. Ozil would have been straight into the team whereas this chap is obviously "one for the future". All this says to me is that there is money available for Fergie. That being the case, I'm confident we will now press on in our pursuit of Ozil!

Bebe, as we can now call him, was wanted by Real Madrid - who were ready to make a bid. Sir Alex had obviously got the tip-off from Carlos Queiroz earlier - possibly a favour for SAF turning up in court (see blog).

United made their move, and offered the £7.4 Million buy-out clause, which Vitoria De Guimaraes accepted. Bebe is more of an attacking midfielder, which more or less ends the Mesut Ozil saga (or does it ?...).

Bebe may be loaned back to his other new club, which he has only been at for five weeks. Videos and a Profile of Bebe are now available on our Blog.

Ok, so maybe i over reacted. I figure as fans we always think we know what's best for the club other than the managers and staff coz we only see things in black and white. sometimes we do, other times we dont.
I dnt know this "bebe" dude so i'll give him the benefit of doubt, but i also know that they are players who are bought for all sorts of reasons other than football, re-sell value n all that. Guess we'll see why he was really bought. United 4 Life.
