Berba Shines As United Down Celtic 17/07/2010
Match Report - United 3-1 Celtic Competition: International Friendly Kick-Off & Date: 12am, Saturday 17th July Venue: Rodgers Centre, Toronto (Neutral) Attendance: 39,139 Manchester United opened their pre-season tour with a comfortable 3-1 win over Celtic in Canada. Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring after a truck-load of missed opportunities. Georgios Samaras then levelled from the spot, after new-boy Chris Smalling was adjudged to have fouled Joe Ledley in the box. But Berba spared Sir Alex's blushes as he set-up Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley to get The Red's Tour under-way on front of 39,193 in the Rodgers Centre, beneath the shadow of Toronto's CN Tower. ![]() One to watch: Gabriel Obertan Edwin Van Der Sar was placed in-goal, with Smalling making his debut in United's back-line, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs filled in midfield, with Darren Fletcher as captain. Gabriel Obertan was given a start on the right, with Mame Biram Diouf up-front with Berba. Obertan impressed with his skill, agility and speed down the flank, and was unlucky not to have open the scoring. Scholes played-in some fantastic balls to the likes of Giggs, Berba and Diouf - showing that he hasn't lost his class. 11 minutes before the break, Obertan played-in Diouf who in turn played-in Berbatov. The Bulgarian clamped the ball down onto his left and fired a fantastic shot into the right bottom corner leaving the goalkeeper bemused. There was a host of changes after half-time, most notably Darron Gibson and John O'Shea coming on as part of a four-player exchange. Just a few minutes after the break, Charlie Mulgrew's free-kick found Samaras, who headed it into the back of the net... only to find he was in an offside position - top marks to the linesman. Smalling, making his debut, was alleged to have fouled Ledley in the area, who went down like a ton of bricks. Replays show the ref just about got it right, with hardly any contact though - Smalling was shown a yellow card for the incident. Samaras then did his business from the spot. Celtic hit the woodwork and forced Van Der Sar to make two good saves, as the Bhoys looked increasingly dangerous. But Berba showed his true colours once more, with fantastic awareness and vision to set-up Welbeck for the lead on 79 minutes. Minutes later, and United found themselves 3-1 up, with the win in the bag. As Berbatov back-heeled to Cleverley, who's strike was deflected into the goals off Darren Odea's thigh. A good performance, a good win, no injuries, hard work and happy fans - everything you want from a pre-season game... CommentsDevil310 17/07/2010 12:06am
