Gaffer Has Faith In Me - Smalling 24/07/2010
![]() Chris Smalling has said he is unfazed by his big move to Old Trafford, and is ready to play first team football from August. The 20-year-old defender signed from Fulham for about £12 Million just a few months back, and has already made two appearances for The Reds on tour... Smalling had played for non-league Maidstone United just over two years ago, and after making just 12 appearances, Fulham snapped him up. The 6ft 4in defender then played just 11 games before Sir Alex Ferguson arranged a deal outside the transfer window. Smalling went on to play another 8 games for Fulham before signing for United. Despite the hasty move by Old Trafford, the England U-21 man says he is ready for the challenge that lies ahead. "The manager has told me that I'm going to be the part of the first team and that as and when I'm called upon I have to be ready," said Smalling. "I'm happy about that and getting ready, which is what pre-season is all about. Obviously I've had since January to know about the move, get a few more games at Fulham and I'm really focused on what's ahead." "When you see a young player like Jonny Evans play so many games for United last season and over the last few years, it's something to aim for." Sir Alex has a bunch of youngsters lined-up for next year, including the Da Silva twins, Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson, Kiko Macheda and new singing Javier Hernandez. "I'm just excited to be part of a bunch of players all trying to break through as a group," added the youngster. "It's great just to be among that and hopefully we can all kick on. Hopefully I can get as many games as I can pre-season." CommentsFred 24/07/2010 2:51pm
£12 million is so expensive for a player of his age and experience in the times we're going through at the moment. He has obviously shown SAF something really impressive and potential is high, but I do worry how good a move this will turn out for us.

It's like eBay, we are waiting until the last minute to bid incase we inadvertently drive the price up or get outbid. There are probably several other clubs planning the same thing!
