Celebrity Rivals Win United Relief 01/05/2010
![]() Over 35,000 Manchester United fans raised money for Sports Relief at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, as past and celebrity Reds took to the field in aid of charity, playing past and present rivals. Music and entertainment was an eye-catcher before the game, as the rivals ran-out winners on penalties in a thrilling game ! Rapper and more importantly United supporter, Tinchy Stryder, kick-started the day, and also played for The Reds in the game. London band The Hoosiers, girl group sensation The Saturdays and legendary crooner Tony Christie all entertained the crowd in the pre-match concert. Soon after, the game kicked-off with names such as Jaap Stam, Ronny Johnsen, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke back in the colours of Red, joined by celebrity United fans Ronan Keating, X-Factor finalist Olly Murs and Max Beesley to take on a team made-up of rival ex-players and fans - which included Ian Rush, Peter Beardsley and comedian Jason Manford. The United side were very unlucky not to go into the interval leading by a few goals, as ex-Chelsea keeper Dave Beasant denied the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Dwight Yorke. Unfortunately The Reds couldn't sustain the pressure in the second half, as the Rivals scored twice in quick succession through Ralf Little and Ugo Ehiogu, both firing past goalie, yes goalie, Clayton Blackmore ! But Ehiogu then scored an own goal to give the home side renewed hope, and Quinton Fortune struck in 'Fergie time' to send the tie into penalties. However, Ricky Whittle could not complete the stunning comeback, as he missed the crucial penalty for United, the rivals won 5-4 on peno's... a fantastic day nonetheless.
