Wembley pitch to blame for Rooney's injury 06/03/2010
![]() Wayne Rooney will miss United's trip to Wolves, after aggrevating a knee injury whilst on England International duty. Rooney played at Wembley twice in four days - and the disgraceful surface is to blame, after taking yet another victim ! Michael Owen has been ruled out for the season, after he picked-up a hamstring injury at Wembley last weekend, as he helped United win the Carling Cup Final against Villa. He will now require surgery and could take half a year to return to fitness. Villa boss, Martin O'Neill blasted Wembley ground-staff and said the pitch looked as if there had been 'a concert the night before' ! Wayne Rooney had a slight knee injury going into England's friendly with Egypt, and Fabio Capello stupidly played him for 86 minutes, before being replaced by Carlton Cole. But the rough surface is mostly to blame for Roo's absence, on which he played on twice in just four days. Sir Alex was just as angry as Martin O'Neill with the pitch, but said Capello shouldn't have played the World's top-striker; "I don't think he should have played," he said. "He told us on Sunday he was feeling his knee. Then all of a sudden people put an arm around his shoulder with England and he wants to play. Fabio Capello has to pick his best team. A win was important so I don't blame him at all." "I was more disappointed with Wayne. Why didn't he come off ?, I can't believe it. It is hard to quell the enthusiasm of people like Wayne," he said. "I think Wembley's a difficult pitch. I thought a horse show had been on it by the time I went on it. It reminded me of a ploughed field," said the gaffer. "I couldn't believe the players had actually played on it !" Comments Comments are closed. | Loading
