Rooney rampant in 4-0 Milan demolition ! 12/03/2010
Match Report - United 4-0 AC Milan (AGG: 7-2) Competition: Champions League, Last 16 (2nd Leg) Kick-Off & Date: 7:45pm, Wednesday 10th March Venue: Old Trafford (Home) Attendance: 74,595 The much-anticipated return of former Reds superstar David Beckham was largely overshadowed by a brace from Wayne Rooney (who else ?), a strike from Ji-Sung Park and a header from Darren Fletcher - to hand United an easy 4-0 (7-2 on aggregate) rout over AC Milan at Old Trafford. Furthermore, the Green & Gold Campaign was as boisterous as ever; with chants, banners, slogans and even support from Becks himself ! United easily out-classed Milan from start to finish, an The Reds displayed great team-work and solid defending. The San Siro side came to The Theatre Of Dreams looking for an over-turn, instead they were steamrolled... Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Marco Borriello, Ronaldinho and even David Beckham were no match up-front for a solid Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and later Rafael Da Silva. Wayne Rooney and Luis Nani came close within the first 10 minutes, and at the other end Ronaldinho somehow missed a headed sitter - which would prove to be the Italian giant's only real chance of the game ! Then, inside 13 minutes something that you would never, in your wildest dreams think of happening... Wayne Rooney scored a header, can you believe it. Gary Neville swung-in an beautiful cross and it connected with Roo's head for his 9th headed goal of the season ! Leonardo was pretty unhappy, and so he brought on attacking veteran Clarance Seedorf for the second-half. But United were clearly in cruise control, with Gary Neville, Darren Fletcher and Paul Scholes all among The Red's top-performers... but let's no forget Wazza. The World's top-striker peeled away Milan's helpless defence, and slipped a ball under goalkeeper Abbiati from Nani's precisioned-curled pass. The tie was over, the goals weren't ! The home side took full-advantage of their goalscoring strength when Ji-Sung Park put United further ahead. Paul Scholes created space as he found the Korean inside the penalty area, and Park blasted the ball beyond Milan's keeper and into the far corner. David Beckham then came on, but with 20 minutes to go he couldn't do anything to dig Milan out of a gaping hole. He did make his mark though - with a trademark volley, but thanks to Edwin Van Der Sar, The Reds weren't left red-faced. And the Old Trafford crowd applauded him with a sigh of relief ! The game was nearly over, and Milan couldn't even get a consolation. Instead, Darren Fletcher headed-in a fantastic goal for himself from Rafael's lobbed cross to end the game ! So, United's greatest-ever win over Milan was, in-truth, a hard fought, but well earned battle. And with Real Madrid knocked-out, and Chelski about to be knocked-out, The Reds could have it easy... and possibly face The Gunners in the next round... haha ! Comments Comments are closed. |
