Form: United are raging with the 2-2 draw with Benfica Lisbon midweek, but they are still on course for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, unlike others. The Red Devils are likely to have a stronger squad to face Newcastle United on Saturday, and will want to maintain their unbeaten run of six games in all competitions. United will be hoping for some favours at the weekend, as they look to close in on top spot...

Newcastle United have been in stunning form of late, with only one defeat in 12 Barclays Premier League matches this season. The Toon Army have taken to manager Alan Pardew after the controversial sacking of Chris Hughton midway through last season. Newcastle currently sit in 4th place, and looking to continue their run of form to threaten Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal to 3rd. But, how long will their good spell carry on ?


The Injury Front: United have been hit with another couple of injury blows over the last week, with Oliveira Anderson ruled out until February, making the midfield look even more under strength. Tom Cleverley and Michael Owen are long-term injury concerns, but Wayne Rooney should feature against Newcastle at Old Trafford. Thankfully, the likes of Chris Smalling, Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck are all back to cope with the absentees.

Form: United are on a run of five consecutive wins, albeit three of those won by a margin of 1-0. The previous Premier League games were all won by that scoreline, while The Red Devils dismantled Otelul Galati 2-0 away and at home in the two past Champions League Group C fixtures. A win over SL Benfica will guarantee qualification to the next round of the European competition, and Sir Alex Ferguson's men are hoping to maintain 1st position. 

Benfica have made a blistering start to the season, and United will be looking to inflict a first defeat of the season on the Portuguese side. Jorge Jesus' side lie joint first at home, and the Lisbon outfit are expected to at least make it through to the Last 16 of the competition. A win at Old Trafford, which would claim a page in history, would see Benfica qualify for the next stage. However, I'm sure they'd settle for a draw...


The Injury Front: United are not expected to lose the invaluable services of Wayne Rooney, despite the 25-year-old striker missing training at the start of the week. Tuesday night will see Tom Cleverley and Michael Owen watching from the stands, as they will do until at least Christmas. However, Ashley Young is back along with Daniel Welbeck and Christopher Smalling, who are all coming back after long periods out injured.

Benfica do not have any major injury concerns for the midweek Champions League Group C clash at Old Trafford, and manager Jorge Jesus will be hoping to utilise his large squad to unsettle The Reds on home turf. Benfica held United to a 1-1 draw earlier in Lisbon, and only Enzo Perez (knee), Javier Saviola (knee) and Nemanja Matić (foot) should be missing for this tie. Javi Garcia is reported to have recovered from a dead leg, and is likely to feature.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder will cause a lot of problems for United's defence, but would do the same for The Red Devils if the Argentinian was purchased !

The Ref: Cuneyt Cakir hails from Istanbul, Turkey and has reffed just five Champions League games before this. The 34-year-old celebrates his birthday on Wednesday, a day after probably the biggest match of his life. Cakir has been called 'promising', and has displayed good skills in the Europa League...

Manchester United became the first club to win in Wales in the Premier League, as The Reds beat Swansea City 1-0 at the homely but boisterous Liberty Stadium. The small crowd watched The Swans keep their dignity, but it was the sign of Champions, as United won while playing to poor standards. Returning Welshman Ryan Giggs was on-hand to assist the naturally talented Mexican forward, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, for the early winning goal…

David De Gea was in goal, as Nemanja Vidic captained the side. Patrice Evra and Phil Jones accompanied Rio Ferdinand either side of the two solid defenders, looking to maintain a fifth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions. Looking for a returning to goalscoring form was a strong midfield comprised of Luis Nani, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Ji-Sung Park. You’ll never guess who was in attack… Wayne Rooney supporting Chicharito.

Swansea City were out of the traps quicker than United, and the top-flight Welsh team made a handful of early chances before Sir Alex Ferguson’s men regained their senses. In the build-up of the game, fans were thinking 'this is Swansea', not exactly the biggest threat to our crown. Nonetheless, Brendan Rodgers’ side put up a tougher test than the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea did earlier this season. But, 'this is United'...

As Angel Rangel played with the ball deep into his territory, Giggsy was quick to disposes his pass back to the goalie. The 37-year-old winger drew the challenge from the remnants of The Swans' defence and cued to Javier Hernandez for the 23-year-old’s 5th goal of the term. It was an easy side-footed tap-in for the striker, immediately thanking his partner in crime on 11 minutes. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was going to be a walkover.

With The Champions in the lead, Swansea wanted to give their 20,000+ fans something to shout about. That happened in the form of expressing their disbelief that usually reliable Scott Sinclair missed a sitter from yards inside the penalty area. The chance was created by Wayne Routledge, who was in shock when he saw his deflected cross miss-hit. United escaped as Giggs tried his luck from a decent free-kick, which narrowly missed the target.

Hernandez almost played Rooney in for a one-on-one situation with Michael Vorm, but that wasn’t to be. Gary Monk should have put his header on target from a corner, before Roo tested Swansea's resolve with a number of long-rangers. Rio's good pal Ashley Williams saw the pair’s friendship count for little as Ferdinand foiled his attempt at an equaliser. Fabio, Darren Fletcher and Antonio Valencia were introduced in place of Evra, Giggs and Chicha. 

Jones hit the post in another agonisingly close position for his first senior football goal, coming moments after Wazza should have put the ball in the back of the net when he chipped over the goals. United held-out, and at the very end Nani was unlucky not to have netted as Vorm thwarted the Portuguese' low drive. The 24-year-old winger should have had a corner out of his effort, but instead settled for referee Mike Dean’s final whistle. 1-0 is becoming popular.

Form: Swansea City just don't know how bad they are, and because of that they have conjured up some magnificent performances and, thus, results. The Swans are unbeaten in their last 3 games, earning a draw with Liverpool at Anfield (we did no better !), a big win over Bolton Wanderers (which seems to be a recurring theme) and a level score with Wolves (we lost to them last season). The Welsh side now face their biggest test, at home to The Champs.
 
United are on a roll of clean sheets, with no goals conceded in the last 4 matches. Although all 4 were won, only 7 goals were scored, with two edgy 1-0 victories in the Premier League over Everton and Sunderland. That's not a good scoring return by our standards, but nevertheless a win is a win. The Reds are targeting top spot over the next couple of weeks, and Sir Alex Ferguson - 25 years in the job - wants to see an improvement over the festive season. 


The Injury Front: Swansea City have a number of concerns, but also a handful of returning players. Winger Scott Sinclair could return to the line-up, while left-back Neil Taylor is fit after suffering an ankle knock at Anfield, but centre-half Steven Caulker reamins doubtful with a knee injury. Kemy Agustien should return after a hamstring problem, while fellow midfielder Stephen Dobbie is hoping for a place on the bench after overcoming an ankle injury.

United have suffered a couple of fitness blows over the last couple of days, with Tom Cleverley ruled out until Christmas following an ankle injury. Michael Owen is also sidelined, for six weeks, with a thigh problem. Danny Welbeck is unfit after being recalled from England, but Ashley Young and Ryan Giggs return after a lengthy spell on the treatment table. I for one can't wait until that £25 Million hospital is built at Carrington !

The Gaffer: Brendan Rodgers has worked wonders with Swansea City since he joined as manager of the Welsh side last year. The former Northern Irish footballer managed to get The Jacks into Championship Play-Offs against Reading. The 38-year-old now finds his troops in 10th place !

Most-Feared: Michael Vorm could be the difference between a tight 1-0 win and a 6-1 thrashing. The 28-year-old Dutch goalkeeper has been in top form for Swansea, and has kept the joint most clean sheets (5), sharing that with David De Gea. Many clubs are chasing his signature after his summer transfer from FC Utrecht.

The Ref: Mike Dean will never be forgiven for handing the 2009/2010 Premier League title to Chelsea after his disastrous performance at Old Trafford late that season. In the aftermath of Liverpool's Luis Suarez charge of racist abuse by The FA of Manchester United's Patrice Evra, the world of football erupted into a race row. FIFA President Joseph Blatter made astonishing remarks about the issue, saying it doesn't exist, and that any discrimination can be resolved with 'a handshake'. Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet launched a shocking attack on Evra, saying he was 'crying like a baby'...

On Twitter, Rio Ferdinand hit-out at Sepp Blatter, calling the controversial Swiss 'condescending', 'laughable' and 'ignorant'. In a midweek interview with CNN, the FIFA dictator denied racism was rife in the game, despite Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Chelsea's John Terry facing punishment over appalling racist abuse. He added that any incidents were 'forgotten' after a match, and that racism on the football pitch could be sorted out with 'a handshake'.  

Blatter's failed attempt at the defence of his comments was met with rage among the public, football and political statesmen, and eventually led to a half-hearted apology. However, the idiotic head of football refuses to resign because it is not in line with his 'character'. "I cannot resign. Why should I ?..." said the disillusioned old man. "To leave would be totally unfair and not compatible with my fighting spirit, my character, my energy."

Not only did Sepp Blatter condone racism, Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet amazed readers and listeners, as he unbelievably gave his support - on two occasions - to fellow Uruguayan Luis Suarez in his racism case. "I believe Luis Suarez, it's simple. I never went out crying like a baby, like Patrice Evra, saying that someone had said something to me. I'm surprised, in a really sad way, that he has been charged. Really sad..." he blabbered.

Poyet also attempted to defend himself on a radio show on Talksport, where presenters and people who tuned into the programme couldn't believe what they were hearing. The former Chelsea & Tottenham Hotspur midfielder said that footballers who reported discrimination to match officials and authorities were 'cowards'. This provoked a major backlash online, on radio and on TV. Sir Alex Ferguson hit-back, saying his actions were 'inappropriate' and 'silly'.
 
"I'm surprised by Gus Poyet's remarks. I think that's inappropriate at a time when people throughout the world are condemning racism. I think he's chosen the wrong time. He's got to think more about it. His criticism of Evra is a bit silly". Sir Alex went on to stress that now Sepp Blatter has apologised, the FIFA President won't feel that he needs to quit, but the gaffer supported Rio's criticism and said his player was free to continue his 'Tweeting'.

What a fitting way for Sir Alex Ferguson to mark 25 years at the helm of Manchester United than to have the north stand named after him. The newly named stand was unveiled before The Reds secured a 1-0 win over Sunderland, who are of course managed by one of Alex’s former captains, Steve Bruce. Those looking at bookmaker free bets will agree that United were a lot more comfortable than the 1-0 score-line suggested at Old Trafford last week.

In truth, had it not been for Kieron Westwood’s heroics in the Sunderland goal, the game could quite easily have been won by a cricket score. It was one of Alex Ferguson’s former players who netted the winning goal. Former United defender Wes Brown showing everyone exactly how to finish with a cool header into the far corner of Westwood’s net from an in-swinging corner. Conspiracy theories were rife at the full-time whistle ! 

The one alarming thing at the moment for Manchester United fans must be the side’s incapability when it comes to putting the so called lesser sides to the sword. United have taken on Everton and Sunderland in the Premier League and have mustered only 3 goals. I am not for one minute being disrespectful to the Evertons and Sunderlands of the league but when a team puts eight past Arsenal they set themselves a certain level of standards.

Injuries to key United players have meant that Wayne Rooney has been utilised in more of a central midfield role. Whilst Rooney is the sort of player that would play in goal if you asked him to, Sir Alex must be keen to get him back at the forefront of United’s attack in the not so distant future. One plus point is that in the last 4 games, in all competitions, United haven’t conceded a goal. But, Rio Ferdinand has come under constant scrutiny in the press.

However, last Saturday week, he was a commanding presence at the heart of the United defence. David De Gea didn't feature on Saturday, but with every game he plays he seems to gain more and more confidence and let’s face it that is what goalkeeping is all about. The United defence will continue to go from strength to strength and will no doubt continue to keep shut outs. This in combination with some more goals should see us regain top spot. 

The key for Manchester United in coming weeks as far as those making Premiership Predictions are concerned is that they begin to put teams to bed. With games coming up against Swansea City, Aston Villa and in-form Newcastle United, I have a feeling that one goal will not always be enough to win games !...

Following a month-long investigation, The FA has charged Liverpool footballer Luis Suarez with racially abusing Manchester United footballer Patrice Evra at Anfield in October. Suarez was seen repeatedly shouting at Evra during the 1-1 draw, and it was alleged he used racial remarks 'at least 10 times'...

On Wednesday, The Football Association charged Liverpool's Luis Suarez with 'abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour' towards United's Patrice Evra, which 'included a reference to the ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race' of Evra. This following a four week inquiry about claims that Suarez seriously discriminated Evra during a 1-1 Premier League draw between Liverpool and United at Anfield on Saturday, October 15th 2011. 

In that time, Chelsea footballer John Terry is clearly seen racially abusing Queens Park Rangers footballer Anton Ferdinand (brother to our Rio Ferdinand) during QPR's 1-0 win at Loftus Road on Sunday, October 23rd 2011. The FA have now set a precedent of charging Luis Suarez, and they are highly likely to follow the same course of action with the Terry scandal. The Stamford Bridge defender is also under Metropolitan Police investigation. 

As it emerged Suarez was charged with racism, FIFA President Joseph Blatter caused outcry, as he claimed the issue could be resolved with a 'handshake'. There are now momentous calls - not for the first time - among public and football figures for Sepp Blatter to be sacked, for him to quit or to retire. Rio Ferdinand is top of that list, condemning FIFA's President in a scathing but fully understandable outburst on his Twitter account. 

TheFA.Com released the statement on the Suarez-Evra incident midweek, which was met by an echo of the transcript on ManUtd.Com as LiverpoolFC.TV announced that they still supported their player despite the charge, and after a private meeting with the 24-year-old Uruguayan, he will contest the charge and request a personal hearing. With the evidence that the authorities have gathered, it is beyond comprehension that the decision will be overturned. 

Evra's allegations were only given more credibility after Suarez admitted he 'expressed himself' towards the 30-year-old Frenchman, saying that what he called Evra - believed to be 'ni*ger' - was not considered racist in South America. It is disgraceful to think that the forward would attempt to play down such a major beach of the rules. Evra has not responded to the charge, with the fullback staying quiet since he lodged the complaint with referee Andre Marriner.

Although no witnesses have come to light, video cameras, still images and microphones have provided sufficient recollections of what happened during Suarez' exchange of words with defender Evra. Both players were interviewed by The FA's disciplinary panel, and Suarez now faces a lengthy suspension from football and a hefty fine. It has also been suggest the player could potentially banned from Old Trafford and other sports ground for life.
